I'm a Westerner married to a Japanese. We're mostly in agreement when parenting, but things come up.
For example, my daughter is pretty apathetic to commands. She might be disabled, or maybe she's just not that kind of kid. Raising a kid bilingually makes judgement calls a lot harder in regards to their development. Anyway, my attitude is that if she doesn't listen, she should be prohibited from things she likes, like cartoons or anime. My partner instead threatens. She says she'll put her outside if she doesn't eat dinner. This upsets me, since it doesn't seem like a parent's behaviour.
I've told her that I think it's fine to restrict luxuries for misbehaviour, but not to inflict suffering. I feel it creates and adversarial relationship between parents and children. Her reply? That's totally fine in Japan.
Generally, I have no 'Japanese' questions after being here ten years (MIKE CASH), but I have little experience in child-rearing here. In N.America, the punishment model may have been normal decades ago, but it's not so much today. How about today in Japan? Can you share your experiences?
