Do the theaters in Japan have American films subtitled, or are they dubbed?
Also, do the DVDs there have English subtitles?

Most of the movies I have been too had English spoken, and Japanese subtitles. As for the DVD's, if it was made in Hollywood, then you can switch it to English and it will have Japanese subtitles.

Often on the big releases they'll alternate the dubbed and subtitled releases. Pirates of the Carribean 3 for example was shown in both versions. 1st showing dubbed, second subbed etc. And the foreign kids movies are pretty much always shown dubbed.

Wow, I've never seen a dubbed movie... not that I've had years of experience though... that would be wretched...

Most of the time I'm thinking, oh wow, I just spent 1800en on the ticket alone, then a teeny box of popcorn and one drink that we shared...

When I first got to Japan I went to the last Harry Potter movie only to discover it was in japanese. that was a nice introduction to japan.
