Japanese 101 - tokoro ni

I'm working on a take-home test for my Japanese 101 course, and I missed a couple important lessons. I need help understanding and translating the following use of tokoro:

Watashi no apaato wa daigaku kara densha de ichi jikan han no tokoro ni arimasu.

I understand as much as: My apartment, from the university, by bus, an hour and a half duration... exists.

I know tokoro can mean part, or place, but I am having trouble piecing the small bit of meaning together. My sensei is very precise about how we translate, piece by piece.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My apartment is 1 and 1/2 hours away from the college by train.

I am still confused, though!

This appears to be similar to a previous question I was given, and marked off for answering incorrectly.
Watashi no uchi wa daigaku kara chikatetsu de yo-jikan han gurai no tokoro ni arimasu
My translation:
My house, from the university, by the subway, is about 4 and a half hours away.

My professor marked off a point next to, and highlighted the word "tokoro". I didn't get a chance to ask my professor to explain, but the two questions/answers seem very similar.
I'm having trouble distinguishing how tokoro effects the sentence, and what the difference might be between these two examples, my answer and your answer.

Maybe he wants an answer like this.

"My home is in a place that is about 4 and 1/2 hours away from the college by subway."

But I don't see much of a difference in this translation,

"My home is about 4 and 1/2 hours away from the college by subway."

Tokoro being emphasized by "is" in the second situation and "is in a place" in the first.

In any case your professor sounds very anal about literal translation which is almost impossible with these two languages.

Person's name no e-mail address wo nakushite shimatta/nakushichatta/nakushichattandayo.

Person's name no email address wo nakushita rashii no desu. (I seem to have lost....so a little formal).

Agreed with Dave on "no tokoro ni aru." A translation from one language to another where the translation is overly literal, grammatically incorrect, very awkward....what's the point even for the purpose of a test ??
