How safe would it be for me to go to Japan (with a couple thousand dollars). With no hotel reservations or plans (probably Tokyo [unless someone suggests otherwise]) and see how long I can last?
With either an open ended return ticket (if they do that anymore) or with no return ticket...
What happens if you'r in Japan too long? Are you deported?
Are you allowed to sleep on benches in Tokyo or do you get arrested?
What would happen to me if I acted like a homeless person in Japan?

Um... you hate yourself or something? Why are you asking of different ways to make yourself suffer in Japan? Just plan a trip, make reservations and such and do what you went there to do. Learn, tour, work or get a job.

If you are wondering what will happen when you sleep on benches and get picked up for looking homeless, then there is a flaw in your vacation plans.

Not a "why are child-proof caps so hard to open" type flaw either, more like the "leave a shaft in your Death Star that leads to the central reactor" type flaw.

If you want to experience what it's like sleeping on pavements in cardboard boxes under a railway bridge I'm sure you can manage that a lot closer to home ...
 
Unless you already have some kind of Visa, they won't give you a tourist visa unless you have a scheduled return ticket.

Also currently they are cracking down on foreigners without a Visa, not only will the deport you, and refuse to let you return to Japan for up to 10 years, but it is quite possible to sit in jail for awhile before hand. And they charge you for sitting in Jail.
In addition, as a foreigner you do not have the same rights as here or that a Japansese national has. They can put you in Jail for weeks without allowing you to contact anyone.

Not trying to be a jerk, but I wouldn't go looking for trouble in a foreign country.
(and being a foreigner sleeping on a park bench will probably result in police coming around, you might get away with it if you were drunk, apologize, and can prove you legally are in the country with an address)
 
When you arrive in Japan, you're required to fill out a form stating things such as the purpose of your visit, and the address and phone number of where you'll be staying (or at least a hotel name). I'm not sure what would happen if you didn't have an answer, but I don't think that I would like to find out firsthand...
 
Hi I want to come to Japan and help give foreigners here an even worse name by getting arrested for VISA problems AND vagrancy.

Any tips?
 
Why would you want to do this? An experiment? Or to save money? If money is it, you could stay in youth hostels. If it is because you want to travel and explore without a fixed itinerary, you could book a hotel for a couple of days, and then look for other places to stay once you're in Japan.

Despite having done a fair amount of reading on various aspects of the Japanese criminal justice system, I have never encountered that little nugget of information before. Is this personal experience, by any chance?
 
In Britain, people do get charged money for sitting in jail. In a recent case, a couple of guys won compensation for an unsafe murder conviction after spending many years in jail. They were then ordered to pay half the money back for "board and lodging" at Her Majesty's pleasure.
 

Bizarre, but I can see how they arrived at that. The government handles the cost of housing and feeding criminals....and those guys weren't criminals.
 
Me too. But even with bass ackwards logic you can sometimes track it down and see how it arrived where it did. Gracie Allen owed her entire career to that fact.
 
I think this is mostly just one of those "I got bored and was in a funny mood." posts. Kind of like my "Give Japanese school girls guns and see what they do with them" post a while back.

I am curious how long his idea might last and what would happen. Maybe if he gives us a bit more detail he might get a rich man as a sponsor who has a wierd and abusive sense of humor...
 
my country

My country is safe but its kinda funny now cause of all the forengiers,
and i remember walking down the street in tokyo and a american asked,
where can he find a bar,he asked me if i can guid him to it since i was the first japanese person he bumped into,so i showed him where one was,
he didnt know how polite we were so when we bowed,he didnt move faraway
enough,so when we bowed he ended up head butting me,i sware i was out on the street for a good minute,he ran off cause he thought he was gonna get in trouble,my head hurted for a week after that.

but back to the topic...

i've actually thought about this before. if the reason you're thinking about it is the same as mine, i.e. because you've got a trip planned but are unsure if the accommodation you've arranged will last, then it's probably best to find some back up accommodation. being a homeless foreigner in japan is not cool. girls won't want to talk to you. i don't know this from experience, but just trust me on this one.
 
WHOAW!!! I haven't been on this site for a while. I think I was tired when I wrote that post. I wasn't being seriuos... I was just wondering what kind of posts I'd get.

I do have questions though.

I hear you don't need a visa if you have a round trip plain tickets and your staying for only three weeks. Is this true?

I'm also wondering wheres the cheapest place to stay overnight? I mean the cheapest.

Does anyone know a cheap way to get plain tickets? Otherwise I'm paying a thousand dollars for plain tickets.

Thanks for responding to my last (and foolish post) but these are the questions I really want to ask.

if i'm not mistaken you're granted a 90 day visa on entry (american citizen)...look on your passport where they stamp it at customs. I'll double check mine tonight, but I do remember seeing that.
