When I was living in Japan as a kid I heard that word being used all the time. In fact, I used it in school once ( around 2nd grade) to refer to a owman in a magazine, and the teacher couldn't stop laughing that a little kid said it. I really don't know about today. But maybe it's just that people in Osaka like to use that word. Where's your hubby from?

BTW, the equivalent word for a handsome male might be "otokomae".

I asked him about it, but he didn't explain much. He just told me it was a term used years ago. He is from Konan City in Aichi, if you know where that is.

I know where Aichi-ken is but not Konan-shi. I think the biggest city in Aichi is Nagoya.

How did you come to this conclusion? It was night and Hattori was dressed as John Travolta. It was a terrible, tragic mistake but I don't see how you can read issues of race into it. I suppose you might be able to read something into the acquittal but you would need to examine the results of all similar cases in Louisiana in order to come to any conclusion about that.

I didn't know John Travolta was a serial killer wanted by the FBI to be shot on sight.

It was just a response to a post that claimed all Japanese/Orientals treated well in the U.S. and foreignors poorly in Japan.

I don't recall this case being framed as a hate crime, either, although certainly not being able to understand each other on its own was probably a major factor in that man's terrible misjudgment.

Actually, he was shot because the home owner grabbed his gun and told the guy to "freeze", but he continued entering the house, at which point the owner shot him. It had nothing to do with race.

The fact remains that conditions are much better for foreigners in America than for foreigners in Japan overall. I'm not trying to say America is perfect or Japan is the devil, so stop trying to put words in my mouth.
