It would be better to change this tradition

I see that to elect a new Pope use smoke. This tradition is belonging to the past centuries, when even electricity and electric lamps were not discovered and invented yet.

Today, the world is engaged with problems of the "atmosphere pollution" with different harmful smokes and gases, so rising the black and dense smoke from the chimney of a famous church seems to bring "polluting air" in the minds of people and it is not a good exhibition.

I offer the church to use lamps with different color for this purpose. Each color shows a stage of the election that you can observe in the picture:

Rather than worry about the Vatican's carbon footprint, it would make more sense for industrialised nations to reduce industrial emissions, stop the destruction of the rainforest and the pollution of the oceans, stop fracking, tackle climate change and refrain from destroying the environment through human conflict (as happening in Ukraine and elsewhere). Don't you think?

The second photo is unrelated to "fumata nera," unless Nero burned Rome again.

Hello, sir

I didn't opine that the church is the cause of the atmosphere pollution; I said, "The view brings such imagination in the mind of people, and it is better to replace it with the light of lamps that is more adapted to today's life."

This is a tradition. I think people would be disappointed to see the signal reduced to a cold, mechanical traffic light. It's better to keep things more old fashioned and traditional. I have a compromise that could work. Instead of using smoke, send a cardinal to the top of the chapel to wave a color-coded flag.

It is a humorous solution :)

My purpose was not traffic light, it was an example. The lights for such task can be every type of light with different colors that are suitable for the election announcement.

It was something that raised in my mind to be used instead of the black and white smokes.

However, signaling with smoke seems a primitive method of announcement today, and a new modernized method should be take place instead. I used light as an example, but there are probably other ways.

But it is useless at daylight, similarly, the black smoke at night
True. Here's another idea using drones that works in daytime.
Anyway I guess it's all done now. Maybe we can revive this conversation next time, in 20-25 years assuming he maintains his health.

Nevertheless, using fixed lights is a simple way with no difficulty, but I think, nobody can convince the church (cardinals) to put away smoke and use light instead.

of all things, the one thing you'd want to modernize in the Vatican is how they announce they've voted on a new pope every few decades?
I sometimes am interested to create a topic in Japan Reference, because I think after these years that I found this site by chance and joined to as a "honorary member", the masters here accepted me and showed mercy to me, though it is mostly a website connected to the Japanese and English language and the majority of the members here joined to the JR for this purpose.

When I came to this site by the way, my English was broken and I didn't know Japanese (I don't know yet, even a Japanese letter). My purpose was not to learn Japanese, but tried to reinforce my English through some discussions here. I cannot claim my English is perfect now, but it got better compared with the past.

The subjects I choose for my topic are often randomly, though some are consciously and some are for fun. I sometimes blame myself, " why do you joined the Japan reference, whereas you neither are familiar with Japanese language nor are interested to learn it ?! Don't you think, you are a killjoy and annoying person there?"

I decided frequently to leave JR forever, but something (a feeling) took me back here. Probably because I am now a known person here and you are familiar with my works, though they are not according to the website course.

Imam Ali said (1300 years ago), " People are the enemy of what they don't know".

Anyhow, this time I choose this subject for my topic, offered to use light instead of smoke and shared it with you to hear your viewpoints.

I hope, it is not considered as an offense or guilt. I didn't say anything rudely or offensive, I just offered to use light instead of black and white smoke. This offering does not contradict with the catholic church tradition to select a new pope.

I think it's important on JREF to realize our members come from around the world and diverse backgrounds. I believe how we write posts here on JREF depends on many things. How our parents brought us up. The education system we went through. The religion if any we follow. The culture of our country we live in. The news/propaganda we listen to everyday. Maybe whether we are male or female. Our age and life's experiences probably. Probably our emotions , soft hearted or hard core. Personal censorship affects my posts , as admin I don't want to post something controversial and anger our members.
So , when I read posts , I try to remember the above things and refrain from commenting or think long and hard before I reply.
I try to look at posts here as a window to the world and maybe learn something that changes the way I think.

Dear Grandpa Frank

Thank you for your sincerely explanation. I know some of you masters, or even the majority of the members here, each one is an expert in his field. I never ignore your knowledge, expertise, and experiences.

Nevertheless, I'm a writer and poet familiar with some particular knowledge and philosophies that probably you are not familiar with. I said, I'm a writer and poet; It is good to know, despite my talent in writing and poetry (in my first language) I have never written anything in a Persian publication or website (except one that I write some simple articles there occasionally). that is because, I dislike fame and would like to be unknown and live in silence.

You may ask, so why do you write in English? There are a few reasons:

1- I want to go advance in this language by exercise.
2- I want to study technical and technological articles that are often in English.
3- Englishes are often interested in the talented writers who have a new style, thought and ideas in writing (especially in fiction writing)

My improper habit is that, I usually don't use all my talent, knowledge and experiences in my writings and try to write simple in a low level. in the other word, I don't write seriously and mostly write as entertainment and spending time. That is why, I have never written a complete story or created a collection of poems.

Imam Ali said, " I didn't see a person, who simulated himself to a group unless one day became one of them".

The problem is that, despite my talent, I didn't simulate myself to the writers, poets, philosophers...etc, and just moved parallel to them.
