Good post, Hezam. I'll respond to your new questions the best way I can. If course, my answers are just my own opinion. We all see the world a bit differently even as we all try to understand it together.

Please allow me to discuss some points and i promise i will not argue with religious reasons, i only have one question about the Judaism view about creation of israel in Palestine.
- What is the judaism view about creation of israel by people not by G-d ? as far as i know it's against Judaism to create israel by people.

I'm not religious, but I have been aware since childhood that there is a sect of Jews who believe Israel was created prematurely, by man. The crazy thing is that most of them live (and protest) in Israel! Most Israelis aren't too religous either, even though there is definitely a fervently religious faction that is growing increasingly problematic. They are the ones who don't want to give the Palestinians anything. Most Israeli Jews are existential.

Countries are often unhappy with what land they receive or lose when the victors make the decisions. And of course, the zionists were not happy with the number of Jews being allowed into the new nation of Israel. They used the Irgun to both increase the numbers and to speed up the formation of the state, and their tactics are hard to differentiate from Hezbollah or Ireland's IRA any other group that we label terrorists: IEDs, bombings, hangings, asasassinations.

I do believe that the Jews purchased a lot of their land from the Arabs and turned it into something habitable and productive. I do believe that many Palestinians fled in '47 and '48, some out of fear and some hoping that the Jews would be annihilated so that they could return. But I also believe a lot of their stories about seized land is valid. There are Palestinian victims, plain and simple. But, I think they have the same chance of getting their land back as Native Americans have of getting land back from the United States.

We just had brunch with an American friend (German-born) and we talked about Gaza a bit. He said that "Israel is still doing some terrible things over there" and I didn't argue. : - ) But, I did point out that when the Israelis pulled out in '05, they were not rewarded for their gesture. The Palestinians destroyed the greenhouses that they left full of flowers and fruit. It's sad, because that could have improved their economy. They also smashed the synogogues on day one and used what was left to store armaments. Not good. Anyway...part 2:

There were many times and places throughout history in which the Muslims treated Jews very well, certainly better than Europeans treated them. Antisemitism is ancient and did not begin in Arab lands, nor was it a part of Islam.
Some of your questions are addressed in the response above, but if you look at recent world events, a huge part of antisemitism in Europe is expressed by Muslims living in Scandinavia, France, Belgium and the UK. Instead of becoming a melting pot, Europe has become just another place where Muslims and Jews don't get along.
You may disagree with me, but I will go ahead and assert that traditionally, Jewish immigrants have more thoroughly integrated with their new homelands. Yes, there are pockets of ultra-religious Hasidim in Paris (and in New York!) who want nothing to do with the native non-Jews around them. I have no love for them. Yes, even non-religious Jews maintain a semblance of the ツ"Old Worldツ", continuing to study the Hebrew language and sometimes even going to temple services. But, they speak the local language and they find work and contribute to society, be it science, the arts or whatever.
Muslimsツ…not so much. This is obviously a generalization but if you explore you will find that in this day and age you will find that while French Muslims often grow up speaking French, they are more likely than not to dwell in Arab-Muslim neighborhoods. They have higher unemployment figures. They cling more closely to their own culture. This is not to say that they all want Sharia law or that they are a majority of terrorists. No, not even close. But, the great age of Arab Enlightenment is sadly in the past. You will read about them in the paper not because they won a Nobel prize in chemistry but because they killed someone who drew an offensive picture of Mohammed, or because a Frenchman of North African ancestry went into a Jewish museum in Brussels and murdered Jews. Or because a pro-Palestinian protest in Paris turned violent, with the protesters turning on French police:

The U.S. and the West will support a dictator or a terrorist when it suits our purposes. As soon as they fail to serve that purpose or we turn on them, we make them the bad guy and attempt to decapitate that regime. The civilian population then suffers through the chaos and then, perhaps, a new dictator.
However, most Arab nations also have their own problems with establishing a fair government. Even without the United States' installed puppet rulers and influence, I don't know how they're going to break out of this cycle. Of course it won't be easy. I was hopeful when the Arab Spring began, but I was fearful of the Muslim Brotherhood. (If I recall correctly, Hezam, you thought that Morsi wasn't give a fair chance or enough time. Maybe so).
3- As a fact (i'm not sure if you know or not) Arab have the upper hand in this world that we live in, Arab ended the dark ages by scince achievements, but this all has nothing to do with Wrong and Right.

Definitely true, as mentioned above, and I will definitely check out your linked site with interest. I know that Arabs invented 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 which all of civilization is built on and I am aware of Arab achievements in navigation and astronomy. I would like to learn more. I should also add that in the small town where I grew up, my family doctor was Palestinian! Pretty cool. He was a good physician.

Jon's a funny guy (and a nice Jewish boy), but his comedy writers are not the best source for news. I think the Gazans have been instructed to flee south. I won't pretend to know what's going on on the ground over there. I can only imagine that it's hell on earth. And look, if I were born into Gaza, I'd hate Israel and the Jews, too. No doubt! That's why this hatred is so hard to break. I can only hope that Israel gets Hamas out of there and that the people elect a more moderate government, one that can work with Israel's gov't. Still, it's hard for me to look at your comparison without pointing out that there are already a billion Muslims on the earth. There are 13-14 million Jews in the world. Less than 0.2%. We've got the quality (in my opinion) but no quantity. I guess I'm part of the problem. I married a non-Jew and we don't plan to have any children. If we did, I would not raise them with Judaism. Jews don't have to be exterminated by Hitler or Mohammed Atta. We're dying out on our own without anyone's help.
So, there are tons of Arabs/Muslims on the planet and of course Israel is surrounded by Arab neighbors. I know it sounds paranoid, but I think one of these days Israel could be destroyed. They could do a lot of damage in return, but only takes one big bomb and one suicidal zealot to annihilate Israel once and for all. Muslims will survive.

Could you please translate the meaning of Ha'aretz ? i'm curious about it.
I remember learning that Eretz means land or earth and H' or ha is a definite article, like ツ'the'. So I guess it's ツ"The Landツ" or perhaps ツ"The country.ツ" I'm not sure why it isn't Ha'eretz with an ツ'e', but Hebrew is usally written with consonants and I was never good at guessing and filling in the vowel. : - )

i will have to hold on claiming historical story that has no scientific proof but religious story, Until this moment there is no evidance that proves the existince of Jews in Palestine, the story is 3000 years based so it's kinda impossible to prove it and claiming recreation of a nation that exists 3000 years ago sounds like a joke. Anyway the solution is still very possible but it needs the will to achieve it by Western govs, not to mention the Saudi peace initiative.

The jews have been forced to move to Israel, especially from Europe and Middle East, The Zionist organizations forced jews to leave their home nations by assassinating them and sometimes by paid groups like (Hoothi group in northern Yemen) they forced Jews to leave Yemen.

The sad reality that most Arab admit is that i know if all jews moved out Palestine and Palestinians returned, i believe that they will make it like any other part of Arab nations (unless they came back from US, Europe) because Arab people are not used to rich life, most Arab live poor life and they don't have time to think of improvements.

Just to clearify something, Jews were treated well in most Muslim period that i know of, Not just that but Jews were saved literally by Muslims in Andalus and during Nazi holocost, Jews were hosted in many parts of Muslim world after they ran along with Muslims from Andalus, and then After Hitler started burning them they ran to Turkey and east muslim lands.

The reason behind violince is that Muslim have one thing left to hold on to which is their faith, It's the most value thing to them, It's like saying "Muslims have what the west doesn't"....

an environment like Iran,Soviet Union or even Saudi Arabia is not an encouraging environment for development, Actually it's the opposite, To achieve scientific developments you need two things, Freedom and Support. and that is what most if not all Arab people don't have.

Aside from blaming (which is one reason Arab still as they are) i agree with you that it will be very very hard for Arab to make a government even in their divided nations, As you see now in many Arab nations, It's an old problem in Arab, They hardly agree on president and even though they don't obey or follow rules 100% ...it's a pain in the azz, they chill when non-Arab rule them.

Muslim Brotherhood are the most loyal group to Arab, they were going to install democracy as it should be but unfortunately the Zionist Arab and some western Govs supported the coup and now egypt has worse dictator than Mubarak. This is a fact that 90% of Arab are aware of. on top of that, Muslim Brotherhood is the only peaceful group that can build democracy because the other Islamic groups don't adopt democracy.

I'm not sure why it isn't Ha'eretz with an 'e', but Hebrew is usally written with consonants and I was never good at guessing and filling in the vowel. : - )

I am not going to take these posts in their entirety, but address some points here and there.


There are Jews who will tell you that (A) Jews purchased the worst, uninhabitable, marshy land from the Arabs at exorbitant prices and that (B) many Palestinians abandoned their home in the late 40s when their Arab brethren promised them that they could return as soon as Israel was crushed. There are Palestinians and a great many westerners who insist that ( C ) the Jews stole Palestinian land outright.

The more I learn, the more I believe all three,

I also believe that pretty much all the stories have truth in them. However, the idea that Jews were sold worthless marsh land at prices too high is not even worth considering as a point of anger. Nobody held a gun to anyone's head and force them to buy land. Its on the level of the "make the desert bloom" story besides. I have no doubt that lots of Israelis took some cheap unused land and made it good, but what some people want to sell you is a story that all Palestine was nothing but a desert and the Muslims made it so and that is a complete load of BS. Its a lie. It seeks to justify the creation of Israel on the basis of "well they weren't using it anyway" and its utter bullocks. Its no more legit than me grabbing some unused mountain in Japan and declaring my own country.

Yet, there is more. Many Palestinians lands were simply burned. Their farms burned. Their orchards burned. Then Jews came in and declared that it was a wasteland and always was. Nonsense.

Next, if Palestinians temporarily abandoned their houses, that is their right. People do that all the time in times of conflict and for good reason. Staying in your home could get you killed. But its still your house. Palestinians never needed Arab permission to return to their homes. Israel should have allowed that instantly.

As for Jews stealing Palestinian land outright, well that really happened and to a greater degree than anything else. First Jews mass migrated to Palestine, did so illegally, and then when the shooting started and Palestinians caught in the middle fled, landless illegal immigrant Jews/Israelis took the houses and land and did not let the rightful owners come back. And the Jews/Israelis did this partly based on a belief that all the land was theirs given them by God some 2000 years ago which is preposterous beyond belief for so, so many reasons. Even Native Americans have better cause to rise up and take their nations' land back. Some of them had their lands stolen just over 150 years ago! But 2000 years! Crazy!

But as I have said many, many times, I have a 50 year rule. That means that after 50 years the status quo must be recognized. That is why I accept Israel's right to exist. All lands stolen and held for 50 years is history to me and I don't recognize claims anymore. I will still call the person keeping the land a bastard if they know the original owner and refuse to give it up though. Such people deserve to be shunned, but not shot at.

And thus, I would totally support a U.N. invasion to put Israel back into the 1967 borders. But come 2017 I no longer will. Even so, Israeli history with regards to the borders should not be forgotten. We should deal with them in full memory of what they robbed others of and only treat them with respect when they give it back.
 
Also I think there needs to be a push for a sort of Israeli right of return. All children, grand children and great grandchildren of immigrants to Israel should be accepted at any time back to their country of origin so that room can be made for Palestinians get their land back.

As per my 50 year rule, I basically do not support the Palestinian right of return as something that can be forced, but, if I am ever going to respect Israel, I need to see them giving up what was stolen.
 
Hezam and alecgraham, I am glad to see you both discussing this in a friendly manner. Even as much as I try to be ruthlessly and unforgivingly facts only, one inescapable fact is that none of us have any power to change anything no matter what we think, even if we fight tooth and nail. So again, its nice to see you two friendly and I hope you stay that way.

Not that I am going to give an inch without some proof or a sound argument mind you!

I've never heard any Jew (or non-Jew) make that claim. If all of Palestine were nothing but a desert, there would be no Palestinians from which to buy it.

But, one does come across text like this:

Making the desert bloom, again

Its about cultivating the Negev. Of course the "again" part is in reference to making the desert (Israel) bloom in the first place.

But thanks for the information. I am not about to deny that so many of the Jews who emigrated to Israel were hard and determined workers who took poor, uncultivated land and made it worth while. Nor am I about to deny that so many of the Arabs who lived there before them were unambitious. That is neither here nor there to me. I cannot support invaders. I don't care about their excuses. It does not matter if its Hawaii of the 1890s, Texas of the 1830s or Palestine. All I can do is accept the status quo of the fact that the land was invaded and its over..

As you know the Israeli gov did not stop claiming that Hamas is the problem in Gaza and they blame Hamas "If Hamas doesn't exist there will be peace" but when you look how they treated their friendly Palestinian gov (Abbas or Yasir Arafat) you will understand that they don't care wheather Hamas is extremist group or 'peaceful' like Abbas gov, They want more land in the end, Abbas has kissed Natureza's az to accept peace invitation but he didn't, Israeli gov has been using Arafat and Abbas and all peaceful partners like tissue, servce me now and i throw you when i get what i want, They Israeli gov did not stop invading the West bank, Everyday they arrest kids, women, men, but in Gaza they don't dare to invade, heck they think hundred times before they start bombing Gaza, My point is, The Arab did not see any serious step from israeli gov all the time, No matter how good palestinian partner they get, they will keep kicking Palestinians out of their homes and take more land.
That's why i said if the israeli gov had a president who thinks like you they will make peace. In other words, Israel is always ruled by extremists and the only governer who dared to talk about peace was Yitzhak Rabin who was assassinated during his speech of peace.

Just because there are some sand dunes does not mean the whole place is a desert. Making some sand dunes into orchards is not the equivalent of making an entire desert bloom, as in "the" desert.

Not only are we dealing with a very intentional exaggeration here, the exaggeration is being used to cover up the land stealing and orchard burning.

Very devious, that "make the desert bloom" canard. Devious like Mossad. And if we stereotype Jews, what famous stereotype is there? Just sayin'. And not about to deny that Arabs have quite a similar reputation.

BTW the Royal Commission report was 1937, before the Jews rose up and violently took over the area with Haganah, Irgun and Lehi. Thus the report on how most Jews were obtaining land does not take into account the burning and stealing that came after.

And what we have after is too much of the victor writing the history.
 
Just my opinion, but the only way there will be an agreement is if the U.S. were to withdraw its unequivocal support for Israel. Interestingly enough, I heard on NPR the other day that George Bush Sr. threatened to end support to Israel over the settlement issue until the lobbyists pushed back.

Just to clarify, when you say an agreement, do you mean between the Israelis and the Palestinians? And if so, do you mean that withdrawal would encourage Hamas, i.e. that they were finally getting a fair deal, or do you mean it would frighten the Israelis into giving in (e.g. going back to the 1967 pre-war borders) in an attempt to get funding back.

Of course it's all hypothetical because while I think the amount of aid can go up or down, I don't think it will disappear. (Nor will our massive aid to neighboring countries like Egypt stop).

Currently, Israel really has little incentive to made a deal with the Palestinians, in my opinion. Especially when you consider how effective Iron Dome has turned out to be. Expensive, but effective. I mean what do the Palestinians realistically have to trade with?

I agree on both counts. (1) Israel's incentive is security, and they may never feel satisfied in that regard. (Satisfied with Iron Dome, but perhaps not with anything Hamas would offer. On both sides, they're probably asking for too much). (2) The Palestinian economy is in shambles, and I suppose it'll stay that way until they have their own state. In my opinion, that state would be good for the Israelis, too, even if things wouldn't be perfectly rosy immediately afterward.

Even though it's off-topic but i will explain something here, There is nothing like Shia Sunni, It's Iran emperial dream vs Arab, You may know that a big part of Iranian people are athiests.

I thought that Shia believed that only direct descendents of Mohammed could lead Islam whereas Sunnis do not believe that bloodline is important in this respect. Am I wrong?

Shia way started 300 years later after prophet Mohammad's death, but they were practicing islam just as normal Muslims (Sunni) and the only belief they had was that they believe that the Caliph must be descendents of Mohammed, And with timepassing the Shiism way changed but it did not turn to violince acts until the Ottoman-Safawi wars, Both Ottoman and Safawi were Turks but Ottoman were Sunni and Safawi were Shia, that was 500 years ago when Shāh Ismāʿil forced people in Iran to be Shia by sword, he even killed his mother because she refused to be shia.
Even after Irani people became Shia no civil war happened ever since the start of islam but after the so called "Islamic revolution: in Iran the government mixed nationality with shia faith, Shiism became more about Persia than islam, And the region entered a very horrible age of violince and civil war, Iran started feeding hatred until the region exploded, Now it's about a Persian emperial dreams, An Iran general said "This is the third time our borders reach the mediterranean coasts" which means they are creating the third Persian Empire.
You can see how irani gov treat the Arab shia in Ahwaz or Kurd shia or the Azeri or any other nationalist Shia, they treat them as second class people even they are shia.
The Irani gov supports the Assad even that he is not Shia, he is alawi (alavi) not Muslim but because he is loyal and he can make the Persian dream come true by handing Syria to Iran.
Same goes on Hoothi movement in my country Yemen, Personally i have never seen barbaric minds like Shia extremists.
Irani people have reached their limits and they revloted against the current gov in 2009-2010, they are sick of it.
