Hi,
Um...how should I start?....well:
I'm interested in moving to Japan in few years after I finish high school and I'll try to find a school there if it's possible.I want to live there and finish a collage there and all that.
But that's not troubiling me.
I'm afraid that I won't be accepted in Japan.I wasn't afraid of it before, but I've read few threads and with every second I'm more afraid that I won't be accepter there.I mean, it looks like there are no good things about foregin living in Japan! (but I still want to live there.)
Are Japanese people really that...how can I say it?....mean to foregins?Do they think we're stupid or something?

I just wanted to ask:
Is it possible for a foregin to live normaly in Japan?

Aha, but is that not life's greatest mystery? Well, I've met people who are on both sides of the fence, they had good or bad. Your best bet is to look Japanese or marry Japanese, or be a tall blonde (lol supposedly a favorite of Japanese men). I'm hoping to do something similar to that, and I, too, worry about being accepted. Once you make friends, I hear, they are very good about being nice, but strangers will still look down on you.

Yes, it is perfectly possible for a foreigner to live normally in Japan. Many of us have done it for decades.

Regarding being "accepted" in Japan: First you have to define what "accepted" means.

Or even better, just be yourself and stop worrying about what/how other people might think of you. I've never gone out of my way to be anything other than that and its worked for me.

By accepted I mean not to be tought of as someone that invading (sp?) their teritory or something.I can't explain!! :(
um,that they don't treat me like trash etc.

Japanese people will never treat you like trash (to your face)

Generally, you'll be treated fine. From what i've heard there's racism in japan but most comes from the older generation as they don't like mixed race couples.

oh,great.-_-' old people will hate me......that's ok! ^^
thank you guys.
feel little better

Who's the guy who had a butcher make fun of his nose? I think it was on this site, and a white guy had a butcher or baker or something make fun of his big nose in Japanese to his face, thinking the white dude didn't know japanese. I'm gonna rest my case with that.

Basing one's assessment of how racist a whole society is or is not on a single second-hand anecdote is a good idea?

Ok. Fine. Not ALL Japanese are racist. But there are enough racist Japanese to make a stereotype, so there are a majority of racist Japanese. Stereotypes have a core of truth to them, remember that. Every other person on this site will agree with me, and the other half will agree with you. If you get lucky, you will have a great stay; it's not impossible. If you get unlucky, and run into racist cops or something, your stay will suck. Whatever.

Basing one's assessment of how racist 50+% of a society is or is not on a single second-hand anecdote is a good idea?

I didn't express an opinion either way, dear child. I merely suggested you reexamine the reasonableness of leaping to a conclusion on shabby evidence. But since I now see you find no mathematical conflict between "every other person on this site" ( = everybody minus you and me) and "the other half" perhaps my expectations were a bit high.

Gee, thanks sport. I've only been living here since well before you were born, but I appreciate the fatherly advice just the same.

If you wish to live normally in Japan, I cannot stress enough how important it is to learn the Japanese language. Learning the culture, and participating in it goes a long way, too.

It is possible to live normally in Japan as a foreigner, but not if you let your existance in Japan be defined by your "foreignerness".

It depends. Do you already live normally in Croatia? If not, you're unlikely to live normally in Japan, unless you embark on a course of therapy. :joyful:

When the word "hate crime" could easily be translated into Japanese and normally used in the society in the future, I'd go to your place to learn your Ninjutsu.

If you accept certain things in the Japanese lifestyle, life in Japan will become a lot easier.

Have you ever been to Japan? my advice is to go there on a holiday and than think about it more deeply, because a lot of stories on the Internet are personal experiences from different kind of people.

I'm already learning.

Fine. Post your views and I'll post mine. But let's not argue on little devil's thread.
