Internet confidentiality in japan

Im leaving for Tokyo soon for a year to study and I was wondering if anyone knew if they have the same level of confidentiality when it come to internet browsing/usage than in north america? I mainly asking this because I often download fansubbed anime episode which are actually legal in NA until they get licensed. But if I download them while living in japan I would assume it would become illigal. So just making sure if I should not worry or not take chances while Im in the country.

So works that are copyrighted in Japan aren't protected by copyright in North America until the copyright holders license the works in North America?

That doesn't make the slightest bit of sense. If that were the case, ask yourself why any distributor would bother paying for the licensing rights. Think about it just a little bit before falling prey to erroneous information based on uninformed fanboy wishful thinking.
 
It is quite rare that the cop arrested guys downloading illegal materials.
But I heard many internet providers regulate P2P software users.

An Asian student was arrested after he made tons of money through the internet without going to school. If he had established his company and had changed his visa status, he would not have been arrested.
 
I don't see the problem. If you're coming here to study for a year, why would you want to be reading fan translations in the first place? lol.
 
Depending on where you study, if you use school computers, you'll likely have firewalls or other security matters blocking/filtering unwanted materials.
 
Your internet connection is monitored against any illegal activities, as the ISP has a legal responsibility to do so. If they find that you are infact doing anything illegal (cracking etc) they will contact you, as well as if copywrite holders detect that you are downloading their material illegally they will contact the ISP who will contact you.

Though Ewok85, do they really apply these actions in Japan or its more like in north america that even tho its not really legal, in 99.99% of the cases nothing is actually done. At least here in Canada, the only reason cops would bother to arrest someone because of internet usage is if they have underage pornographic material.

You seem to have flip-flopped from "actually legal" in North America to "it's not really legal". Emerson tells us, "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds", but a non-foolish consistency would certainly facilitate rational discussions.

I know people who have had their internet connections disconnected after repeated warnings, which is 100% legal. I do not know of anyone being sued over downloads, but I have heard that there is some heavy surveillance in place.

What many people do not understand is that you do not own your internet connection, you are renting the use of it from your ISP, who has a responsibility to ensure that you, the customer, are safe, and that their connection is not being used for illegal activities. They are within their rights to disconnect you if you break their terms that you agree to, and they are legally obliged to hand over your personal information if it is requested by a court order.

Its no different to how a phone company will hand over the details of people who have been found to be doing illegal things with their phone to the police.
 
From what I have read, Japanese ISPs don't stand their ground on court orders and instead will typically give police access to anything they want based on a mere request.

I wouldn't count on confidentiality here.
 


An ISP does not log where you download files from. They log activity to their mail/news group servers, when you log on/ off and that's about it really. This amount of data is already quite large and is more then most ISP want to log anyway. If needed they can log more but this is only done at the request of law enforcement.

However most sites you go to do log their visitors actions. It is these records that are most often used by law enforcement to track down those they wish to prosecute. ISP records are then used to correlate that information.
 
A poster named 'Rudd-Crunch' on BigDaikon made a fansub of a Rahmens comedy skit about the 'proper' way to eat sushi. I'm sure many of you have seen it (Japanese Tradition - Sushi). He added the subtitles himself, and released it on his webserver for only an hour or so to posters of that site. Soon it was all over the internet, and he was contacted by the copyright holders who were (to say the least) pretty miffed.

The point is that it's illegal.
