The context of this sentence in my imagination is that it's written in the autobiography of a woman born in the early 20th century who was allowed to grow up with the freedom to climb trees and explore rather than being made to be prim and proper as little girls should. And that allowed her to follow her passion and do great things. This sentence is a little odd because "being made a fuss of" is a positive action so you would normally want to have a fuss made out of you. This sentence sounds like the person was able to and wanted to escape that. I don't know why you would want to but it's possible.
I found it via this Google query. I think it was written by a native speaker.Thank you for the help, Michael2 and mdchachi.
Mdchachi, I tried to find the original essay, but I failed because my Google couldn't find it. How did you find it? Is this essay written by a native English speaker?
Just put quote marks around the phrase you are looking for and Google will only return matches for the exact expression. It's a useful editing tool - I often find that strange combinations of words turn out to be common expressions in particular scientific fields.Oh, I didn't know Google has such a useful tool. Thank you for telling me.
