I want to visit Japan, but I dont know what to go see when Im there Please give ideas

I want to go visit Japan, to fulfil this promise I made to a really good friend of mine, who was a foreign exchange student, from Tokyo. I just have started studying Japanese seriously, I want to make a good impression, I am afraid of travelling there and seeming rude, to the native people, of that country. I also weant to acquire a katana, a men's kimono, and a few other things, for my friends back here. I am starting to study Hiragana, at this moment, and I will start attending a Japanese club, that hosted at my school. If anyone could help me out, I would appreciate it.

There are so many things to see in Japan that I really think you should start with a guidebook. Try your local library; just make sure you get a book that's only a year or two old.

Thanks for the insightful wisdom. I remember trying to date the japanese exchange girl, at my school. I wanted to make a good impression, She told me that we had to get her parents approval first though. So I didnt go out with her, I just remained close friends with her. Going to Japan? Odaiba! Visit Odaiba.... The Fuji TV Building is located there, as well as the Musuem of Emerging Science and Innovation. Oh, and you can find lots of things at the Green Marche for good prices! I love Odaiba!

Well would it be acceptable if I, UPS it to my home in Arizona, I could ship it in a wooden crate, with hte other stuff i want to send back, I want to find a dozen Japanese paper lanterns, (My friend want most of them.) a men's formal kimono, a couple of bottles of good Japanese sake, some Inuyasha aniem dvds, Cowboy Bebop if they are availible on DVD, and a few other things. If anyone can answer this It would be appreciated. thanks again for posting

Well, I just wanted to know, Ive had a few idiotic encounters with the security and their scanning equipment. I set off a walkthrough metal detector, with a metal filling and some chewing gum. And my stupid dress shoes set the machine off, because they have a steel plate in the bottom, where the rubber soles, and the leather connect. It took me a half hour to convinve them I wasnt hiding something. I felt so embarrased. I wonder if they'll object about the Sake, maybe they steal some of it when Im not around or as there loading it into the plane.

You may be surprised to find that formal kimono are not something you buy off the rack. You will almost certainly be even more surprised when you see the price of those things.

*hi everyone ! this is my first post ^^* cool forum!

i was in japan in august of this year and spent a lot of time in tokyo (mainly shibuya and roppongi) and nagoya (miyoshi and sakae). All of which were really fun.. i assume you will be going to Tokyo, - seeing as how your friend lives there - so i can reccommend to you a few places there.
If you like shopping, for clothes, go to shibuya and harajuku if ur into weird japanese trendy clothing. Shibuya has da booomb stores.. LV, Chanel, Gucci, Prada, Dior, Burberry, Commes Des Garcon, Dolce & Gabbana.. you name it... and they have TONS of them too.. and lots of really nice, fancy dept. stores.. 109 tower is cool for japanese clothing. Right outside shibuya station is an area called Hachiko Square where lots of people hang out and flirt (nanpa) hehe. fun fun, even if you dont speak lots of japanese, the people are so nice to Americans they will try their best to communicate, dont be shy !!! they love u ! <3
Roppongi was cool, but there is like more foreigners there than japanese... lots of big black guys that are on the streets at night in suits that will try to lure u into their night clubs. the best club i found there was "Lexingtonqueen" LexingtonQueen.com is for sale | HugeDomains TONS of celebs go there.. when i was there, Ashlee Simpson and her band were there, and the night after i was there, Vin Diesel was there!
Nagoya was cool.. but its just like a *mini*tokyo, but its still a really big city.. sakae is like shibuya for shopping; i think its just as good in my opinion.
*oh yea* one more thing, a common misperception in america is thinking that most japanese speak english. this is WRONG! they may be able to read/write it, but most cant speak worth crap, so learn your japanese be4 u go, or go with someone that does speak it, or else you will be lost (although the subway system there is very easy and convenient).
