I have always had Gigabyte boards, can't say I've had any problems with them.

id say check price watch for a gigabyte mobo/chipset combo. you can get a good deal on amd 64 bit processor

Thanks guys....I've still been holding out. This time I'm going to ensure that I can watch TV and do video capture on my PC. (don't even want to tell you how old my current PC is)

For me.....

I've had the best luck with MSI motherboards. For TV use. I use the ATI boards; they have a new High Def card that does it all.

On a budget? There's no better processor than the Sempron. However if you wait, Intel might drop the prices of its CPU further. The ASUS P5B Deluxe with the Core 2 Duo E6300 should make a solid base. Couple it with 1GB of RAM and a decent video card like the 7600GT, X1950Pro or the new DX10 cards should make for a pretty fast PC.

Bad luck wit ASUS ?

I had 2 Asus boards burn out on me in under 2 years. Maybe just a fluke, but I sure had bad luck with them?

Capacitor problems I believe. Just curious, was it the P4P800 series? I had one of those but it started having a mind of its own after around a year. No change to the BIOS can be made (The board won't boot if you did the former) and it just cannot start with a hard boot so I am forced not to cut the power to the PSU.

I'm now using 2 PCs. Their boards are... One a ASUS P4C800 DELUXE and the other a MSI K8N Neo2. Both are working fine. The former is over 2 years old now and is still kicking. So i'm guessing certain batch of boards have problems. (As they use the same batch of caps)
