I'm going through Pimsleur and I'm getting to the point where I really want to understand what they're talking about and not just parrot it. Up to lesson 18, that was pretty easy. Now they're getting into some just weird words that I'm having a hard time finding in my grammar books.

Right now they're talking about "He or she would like to drink."

It sounds like they say, "のみてがって いるんですんが窶? Please help me figure this one out. I'm looking in my verb book and it seems like maybe they're using the て conjugation of the たがる form of the verb. But what the heck is the いるんですんが part? I don't understand that and they don't really explain it.

Can someone please explain? 😅

Thanks!!

Yeah, it's のみたがっているんですが. The いる is an auxiliary verb that means progressive action or that something is in some state (when used with transitive verbs). So, "he/she/they want something to drink." For the のだ part, well, that's been addressed a lot. I'm too lazy to search for it now, but I'm sure you'll find a lot if you search. And が is used to state something indirectly.

It still sounds like they're saying ですんが. It sure sounds like they're throwing a ん in there after the です. Am I just hearing it wrong? Would that just not make any sense?

Thanks!

Hmm, probably just the "ng" sound. They do that sometimes. Check out this thread. I think it explains it pretty well.

Ahhh! Thanks! After reading that and then listening to Pimsleur again, I see what they're talking about.

Now, why is there a ん after the いる?

Are they using the て conjugation because of the いる auxiliary verb?

Why wouldn't they say のみたがります? Do they need the いる so they can use ですが?

That's what I was referring to with the のだ comment.

Yes. The いる auxiliary is connected to the -て form of verbs.

No, they need the ん so they can use ですが. As for why not のみたがります, I believe that's because they are saying that he/she/they want something atm, and the progressive shows that they are in the state of wanting. If you said のみたがります, it could mean that they will want it. There may be something else there, but you'll have to wait for someone farther along than I to explain it.

gimme your mail and i'll mail you the notes for the whole first chapter of pimsleur...
