Ok, I was using them correctly. I thought maybe I'd been facing the wrong way or something. The first time I ever used one was on the Shinkansen, bouncing around, and let's just say it was, um, challenging. 😊

This is funny....
How to use Japanese style toilet

the have one in the shinkansen.. aaaah SAVE ME SAVE ME...

i love the toilet with the heather, waterspray etc on it... im going to try it in summer ( post come later )

did you miss to brooker? hehe

One of my apartments in Japan had a really cool (Western-style) toilet with the heated seats and bidet. The bidet took a little getting used to, but eventually... Who needs a shower when you can just, woo hoo 😊 . Nothing like a little freshening before hitting the izi. 😆 Ok, I'm sure no one wanted to know about that. 😲

LOL. Brooker I know the feeling. :p Here is me and my fiance's toilet.

Yeah, that's similar to the one I had. Looks like Captain Kirk's chair. "Captains Log. We're nearing Uranus looking to wipe out a few Klingons." :-)
:homer:
Also kind of reminds me of the Simpsons episode where they go to Japan and the toilet welcomes Homer, tells him it's "honored to receive his waste," puts on a little water show for him, recommends where they should go for dinner, and then broadcasts Homer's "movement" on the TV for the whole family to see.

So is it common to squat over the toilet in Japan rather than to sit? Are these the kind of toilets used in most housholds? Personall I don't know if I could use it...I'm so used to actually sitting down and reading my magazine lol I imagine it would offer some encouragement to hurry up and get done fast! lol

The first picture shows a style of toilet widely used around the world. It is standard in most Asian countries, but also exist in some European countries' public toilets (e.g. in France, although on the decrease now).

Rudel's picture is what I would have in mind as "Japanese toilet", as I believe they invented it, and many Japanese homes and offices are equipped with it. The seat warmer is nice in winter, but I don't really like the jet functions. I think it's more of a woman thing.

I remember I was just pressing any button on that thing, then the water squirter thing shot out. Kinda ticklish. But yeah, it seems more like a woman's thing for me too. I'd like to keep my butt dry. lol

The squat toilets are mostly only in public places. The Japanese like them because you don't touch them and that seems more sanitary. I never liked using them and I could usually figure out how to find a Western style toilet instead. But every now and then, there just wasn't any other choice available.

I never do #2 in a public toilet. I can't remember the last time I've ever done it due to that reason I don't want to touch the toilet. I think I would prefer the squat toilet in this case. ☝

Ah I see.. So they are most common in public, but what about in the home? Do most japanese homes use these toilets or the more western style of sit down toilets?

And silly question...but are japanese tiolets able to accomodate a western sized..um.."movement" :p I don't know about the rest of you but I have um...generous sized...movements...and I take 1 everyday 😊

Sorry for the details..I really am :p 😊

Sit downs at home.

Yes. :-p

Oh, my squating to use the bathroom? ☝ Don't know if I could ever get use to that. That's very interesting nonetheless. How different cultures have different ways of going to the bathroom. 😊

Went I went to the toilet in my friend's place, I was exited about the heated toilet !!! I miss a thing like this at home...didn't dare to tough the rest of the buttons tho ☝

A heated toilet?

That's just crazy.

I don't see why you need a toilet to warm your buns...

...it's not like you're a bakery or anything... :D

In winter that thing can get an icecube !! that's why the Japanese, as gadgetfreaks as they are invented this thing ! And I LOVE IT !!! 👍

That's so strange. I always wondered about that.
I really don't think I'd much like squatting.
Thanks for the informative guide Brooker. :D

What are all those buttons for on that toilet though?

You have to realize that central heating is not the norm in Japan, and that lots of homes and even some public buildings can be absolutely freezing in the wintertime. Particularly the toilets. That seat warmer beats the heck out of plopping your buns on a frozen toilet seat.

I got quite a surprise today while walking through Sekichu, a local hardware, do-it-yourself, and general household goods chain in my area. I walked past a row of commodes on display and just as I passed one.....it saluted me!

They've decided that a seat warmer isn't enough. A butt washer and butt dryer aren't enough. Now they have one that automatically raises the lid when someone stands in front of it. I think it's a poor idea and will result in more guys peeing with the seat down. And we all know how much the ladies luuuuv those guys.

Yikes, something tells me I better start working on my deep knee bends before I visit! Are you all saying women use this kind too????

To control the heat of the seat, and the heat and pressure of the water from the bidet.

Pararousia Yikes, something tells me I better start working on my deep knee bends before I visit! Are you all saying women use this kind too????
Oh, you'd better believe it. Yeah, if you're not used to squatting like that, it can be real hard on your legs to use muscles that don't often get much attention. It kind of keeps your bathroom visits short as it's hard to have a leisurely squat when your legs are cramping up.

A lot of houses in Japan have this shower toilet/ washlet.
It makes sense if you think about it.
Imagine your hands are dirty. Do you just wipe them?
You will wash them, won't you? :-)

I just sort of drag my hands across the carpet.
