How good do we are at KANA characters?

I'm not to sure what the point of this thread is. Are you interested in seeing what others did(1), or our you asking if learning all of kana first is necessary or important(2)?
(1) The method I used was to get both hiragana and katakana down before I ventured to far into the core of the language. Then when I started in on basic grammar, vocabulary, etc. it gave me the opportunity to use my new knowledge and improve upon it.
(2) I wouldn't say its completly necessary to completly master kana before starting into the rest of the language but if your a serious student, I would highly recommend getting a solid grasp on both hiragana and katakana at an early stage.

Both of them are the points:
To know the general level in this forum about KANAs. How many people are just starting and how many people are already mastering them?
And the personal experience about KANAs characters, like, how long did it take you to forget completely the Romaji? Did you start with Hiragana or Katakana?
To me it was a nice and curious experience to learn a language with different characters.
My answer is not the highest one yet, but almost.

I never even used Romaji. I actually ventured into Japanese without a clue on how to start. That's why, unlike most people, I started with Katakana first!
I always hated Romaji. I find it a big waste of time. If you take a few days you can master Hiragana and Katanana and use them directly. Besides, I find it very weird to write many words without "ー" or with "ō" instead of "おう"!

I started by KATAKANA, because I thought it would be a pain in the neck to study KATAKANA after mastering HIRAGANA. So I prefered to get rid of KATAKANA first.
Most people start with HIRAGANA, and, after that, they feel not to need to focus in KATAKANA too much. So it becomes very hard or it makes you feel lazy to master KATAKANA.
I only used ROMAJI to study the firsts grammar points while I was "auto-learning" KANAs.

That's exactly my mistake this morning on our Japanese class. I take note using romanji but when Sensei recited the word for us to translate it on Hiragana toink! wrong spelling.

Also don't forget that Romaji is misleading in that some long "oo" sounds are written as おお like in 大阪（おおさか）or 多き（おおき）。

I stumbled into the language, read what everyone else said and half-assedly learnt hiragana. I struggle with some katakana now, and I could get faster at reading hiragana, but oh well...
I guess learning hiragana first is good, because its proven to work.
My older brother started teaching me Japanese and forced me to learn kana..., and now I only type in romaji if i am on a computer that doesnt have japanese input...
Romaji needs to be scrapped... it was only made seemingly to help foreigners that can't be bothered or are too scared to learn Japanese script...
Meh, I can't change how the world works, but I can advise everyone to learn kana first, and learn both katakana and hiragana at the same time... thats what I did by the N row (な、に、etc - don't know what else to call it) so you see 「な」or 「ナ」and you automatically thing 'na'.
On the other hand, when I learnt row S in katakana, i found myself trying to relate 「サ」to 「さ」which takes longer and is incorrect to do. lol.
Anyway, im going to try and sleep now. Its 2:11AM ^^
