I went to Japan 5 years ago on a student exchange program. However, I have since lost contact with my host family. Digging through old drawers I found their address and phone number. When i try to dial the phone number it doesnt work.
(082)221-6923
Is there some kind of counrty code that I have to input?

So i figure I'll try a letter. I was wondering what would be the right way to write this on an envelope to ensure its arival=
4-9, 3 CHOME, USHITASHINMACHI, HIGASH-KU, HIROSHIMA-SHI 732-0068
Any help would be greatly appreciated 😊

Hi, nakeday!

Your host family lives quite near my mother. :-)

To call Japan, you need to add 81 before the telephone number. Also, skip the 0 in 082.

So you must dial 81-82-hostfamilysnumber.

Hope it helps. 🙂

yeh it was actually some kind of Buddhist temple. I stayed with the "caretakers." I was a great experience. thanks for the phone info. By any chance do you know how to say I should ask for a certain person to talk to if they answer? example, "May I speak with_____please."? thanks again :-)

Simulation dialogue:

Hiroshima: Moshi, moshi.

Nakeday: Moshi, moshi. [Name of temple] desuka? Watashi wa "Nakeday" to moushimasu. Ano....[name of person] wa irasshaimasuka?

Hiroshima: Hai, imasu. Shou shou omachikudasai. (You wait for the person to come to the phone.)

*If the person is not there and you want the person to know you called and will call back tomorrow:

Hiroshima: Ee...ima orimasen.

Nakeday: Ano...America no "Nakeday" toiu mono ga kara denwa ga atta to dake otsutae kudasai. Mata ashita kakenaoshimasu.

Hiroshima: Hai, wakarimashita.

Nakeday: Yoroshiku onegai shimasu. Gomenkudasai.

Hope this helps. FYI, sometimes it doesn't work this way--but you get the idea, since you've been in Japan before! Never mind minor mistakes in courtesy! People can tell when you are sincere or not! :-)

WOW! really thanks alot this helps so much im gonna see what time to call now. 🙂 arigatou gozaimasu

Sorry, nakeday! There's a typo!!

THIS ONE:
Nakeday: Ano...America no "Nakeday" toiu mono ga kara denwa ga atta to dake otsutae kudasai. Mata ashita kakenaoshimasu.
