I don't know. I've never heard of that..

Usually "Ohayou" is used in morning, but is used in the daytime or the night too. But this is a special case.

"morning" is the start of day, and "Ohayou" is the beginning greeting of day. But some people start a day in the daytime or the night.

an instance, a night watchman.
His work start in the night, of course his colleague too! the night is the start of their one day. In this case, they say "Ohayou" but not "Konbanwa" at his workplace.

It's a variation on "hayai", if that helps you any.

Similarly, "arigatou" is a variation on "arigatai"

As Nangi pointed out, in the workplace "ohayou" is the common greeting when coming to work, regardless of the time of day.

that's why i've never seen anyone saying "Ohayo" in the evening lol

I had forgotten about using Ohaiyou at the beginning of work at night. I used to work at a Japanese restaurant. We would start at about 6:00 pm. It was wierd hearing everyone saying Ohaiyou at 6:00 pm, but that is how they did it.
