Torrential rain swept through Tokyo and nearby areas on Thursday afternoon, cutting power to thousands of homes, triggering flood warnings, grounding flights and disrupting transport. By 5:04 p.m., Tokyo Electric Power Company reported that 6,240 households across the Kanto region were without electricity, including 4,230 in the capital, with Shinagawa, Ōta and Meguro wards most affected. Authorities in Setagaya, Meguro and Ōta wards, along with parts of Kawasaki and Yokohama in Kanagawa Prefecture, issued emergency alerts as hourly rainfall reached an unprecedented 100 to 130 millimetres. The Japan Meteorological Agency called for caution against overflowing rivers, flooding in low-lying districts and landslides, while also warning of lightning strikes, sudden squalls and hail.
