Heya, konnitiwa (or I guess depending on the time of day: ohayo gosaimasu or konbanwa). I'm a 19yr old male student at Cornell University studying economics and asian studies with a concentration in East Asia (specifically Korea and Japan). I'm here to learn more about Japan through other people's insights. I'm trying to get away from all the textbooks you know ;-). I really hope to live in Japan when I graduate and I want to enter the JET program as well when I graduate. Unfortunately, I haven't started learning Japanese yet because last year I was actually in the school of engineering. So this coming academic year I'll begin my studies.

My passion for Japan began when I was about 6 years old - thanks to Sesame Street: Big Bird In Japan. I'm not joking, this is where it all began. I remember that the way they portrayed Japan in the show was so magical and mystical. Of course, Japan isn't even close to how they portrayed it (low hanging myst in a Japanese garden with geisha and koto in the background... ooooh, how pretty), but it sparked my interest in finding more about the country. Since then, I've discovered anime, music, food, culture, and language - and I've fallen in love with it all. When I had the opportunity to visit for a short five days in December of 2003 I fell even further in love with Japan. I visited Tokyo, Nara, and Kyoto and I absolutely didn't want to leave - on the train to Narita I was listening to a song called "Dreamland" and I thought that I was definitely in my Dreamland (and I was sad that I was leaving it). I hope to live there when I graduate; a suburb of Tokyo or Kyoto would be perfect. Well, I'll see you all around ^_^ (is this enough? lol). :-) :-)

Welcome to the fora, lonesoullost3! Nice intro. I remember watching "Big Bird in Japan" in my Japanese class five years ago. I can't say that I really enjoyed it. One thing that has stuck with me from it, though, is the stupid song: "one, two, three is ichi, ni, san." Good luck with your studies and with the JET Programme. I'm looking forward to seeing you around here. Enjoy your stay with us! 🙂🎈

Welcome to the forum lonesoullost3.
Kyoto will be a nice place to live.
It can be hot in summer and cold in winter, though.
A friend of mine (she was from San Francisco) lived there for 2 years, and she absolutely loved it.
Enjoy the forum! 🎈
