Foreign women in Japan

As an American woman (and an African-American one at that), I was curious about how foreign women are treated in general in Japan. I'm sure this topic has been asked before; and if it has, I'd be more than happy to read whatever posts there have been. In fact, I've found interesting discussion in other forums, but the more I hear the better idea I'll get of how it is. It's important to me, as I plan to attend language school this Fall in Tokyo. I know about the groping thing, and while that distresses me I'd like to find out everything I can, whatever else I might have to look out about.

My personal opinion: To stop believing everything they say and asking so many question about how they treat people and stuff like that...Just get over there and enjoy the heck out of yourself !!! Else stay at home, and don't come out .The thing is, everybody expect too much or strange things from Japan...it's just a different way of life, but in the long run it's like everywhere,racism..discrimination etc. are not only Japangrown things You don't have to worry, just make sure you know what you want and can manage while living there ;-) !

I think Rocklee's answer sounds quite sensible. To try, make the trip, find out! I think you would have fun! Of course, you might find discriminating people... but it's not only in Japan... (I'm woffling now, I don't know what I'm trying to say, lol) I think I mean to say, there would be discriminating people, and OK people, both.

But, unfortunately I can't speak from personal experience, so I can't answer your question properly by giving you the examples. :sorry: Maybe some non-Japanese women in Japan on this forum? Hello? :?

Hmmm well all I know is I saw this on a documentary about Canadian women going to Japan for this job where they talk to guys and get paid for it. It's called "Tokyo Girls" if you want to know. Anywho! I don't know if it has anything to do with it but, supposably if a Japanese man is dating a foreign women they are concidered lucky to get someone outside of their race, culture and whatnot. I never knew that. I saw that not too long ago so my bad if I am mistaken.

When my husband and I were dating, there were so many of his Japanese co-workers who would tell him how much they "envied" him for having a white girlfriend. I can't count the number of times I got the googly-eyed treatment from all of them. Kind of gave me the creeps, to be honest...

I even had a few who asked me out for a drink behind his back... ☝

Thank you all. That's the line of response I meant. I was also thinking that it would be better to just experience it for myself to really understand, because other people's experiences may very well differ greatly from my own. My annoyed response earlier was more to the second person who'd commented.

Did any of them ask you for a 窶ｹﾃ?窶敖ｯ pube to take home and show to their friends?

I used to have coworkers ask me for a couple of crinklies (from my beard) to show off to their buddies so they could lie about having bedded a white woman.

I'm in Japan, Tokyo, right now for the first time. I'm still a highschool student (so I guess I'm pretty young) and traveling alone. And I can say I'm having the time of my life! Japan is a lot of fun, and I've only been treated nicely soo far. Most of the time, as others have said, many things said about Japan makes westerners believe that Japan is this wierd *** country and scary like hell - well, it really isn't. The japanese males are really nice, some of them are ultra shy, but none of them have ever treated me badly. I've only gotten positive comments - western women, I guess, like Kirei na me already said, are popular.

ONly once I was offended, that was when an older man tried to pay me money for me to go with him in his car for whatever purpose. But I only walked away and no bad thing happened. *hides from scary buissnessman*

Yes, please DO WATCH OUT for the horney old businessman type who thinks any foreigner is easy to get into bed for a quick 20 or 30,000 yen. Watch them the most especially if they have been drinking.

I had an African-American female friend when I was in Japan last. She had no problems as far as I could tell. In fact, I remember her complaining one day that too many Japanese people wanted to be her friend and it was creeping her out a little. One person (Japanese female) kept coming to her work and leaving her notes asking how she was, if she wanted to do something that night etc.

☝ No... no, that was not me... I bought a school uniform though! But... a girl being blonde, walking down the streets in a school uniform just for the heck of it (with being an actual student) is sort of just ASKING for men (older men mostly) to try and pick you up... Then you can't blame the "perverted japanese men".. a school uniform IS fetish.. there's no helping that... (unless the school uniform is used in a scary movie, then it's not fetish, then it's scary, which is really cool!) I wont be using my uniform in Japan, I think. But when I get back to Sweden! *will put it on in the Swedish airport*
