Finally free wifi in Japan?!?!

Too slow, but it's something. They really have to do something more regarding this if they want to host the Olympics :win:

The Chinese Government offered to provide High speed wifi completely free of charge on the entire London underground system,

As a gift for winning the olympics bid
But it was eventually blocked by MI5 due to "security concerns"

During the olympics there was free wifi, but only limited to stations on the network.

I'm traveling a lot and I still can't find any FREE Wifi spots. Most of them require that you register and pay a small fee etc.
Very annoying.

Hot spot vending machines, that would be really cool.

Those who are using the pocket wifi devices how do you find them? are they fairly reliable? Just thinking about what I'll use on my next trip.

Lawsons provides free WiFi. You just need to get one of their free "Ponta" point cards and register the thing through the terminal in one of their stores. I've used it a couple of times with my old out-of-contract iPhone 3GS and with my current 4S to download a larger app than was possible through 3G transfer. I did that transfer when I was about 30m away from the store, so it isn't like you have to be inside to take advantage of it.

Thanks for the info! Very handy.

Thanks a lot for that Mike! Let me try that out one of these days.

I'm Japanese.
At the Staebucks of Japan, we can use free wifi.
The other day, I used for the first time.

I tried to sign up while I was waiting for my Bus in Shikjuku's Starbucks, and although I could sign up, I couldn't use the internet on my iPod touch at that time.

Anyone else besides Kirin31 that tried it?

I have had on and off success with my older iPod Touch (3rd Gen) at Starbucks here in the US.

Might just be a coincidence though.

Near Osaka station, Mikiya coffee in Albi outdoor. You can use free wifi. I often use it.
