I noticed this article on global energy prices, for a 'gallon' of gasoline, natural gas, and electricity, around the world. More than Japan vs the world, one thing I focused on was Japan vs Korea and Taiwan.

• While gasoline prices are comparable here and in Korea, Taiwan is a fair bit cheaper.
• The electricity price in Japan is more than double what it is in those places. (and it's now going up!)
• Natural gas here is even more--almost triple the price in Korea, and almost four times the price in Taiwan.

Besides location, these three countries would seem to have in common that they are resource/energy-poor, which needs to be imported. But still, there are the price differences. On the other hand, of these three, only Japan makes one of the top 25 lists (for natural gas). At least Japan and the others are not on the other top lists.
