dressing in japan

um ok im new to the site and i wasnt sure where to put this. so dont get mad at me. ok?
anyway. um. i dress in the gothic lolita way and i just want to know in the off chance i went to japan if i should just leave my dresses here and wear jeans. i just wonder beacuse of all the things ive been hearing about japanese not really liking forigen people and stuff. so would i just be asking for trouble if i dressed like i do
but then i heard that japanese love forigners so then maybe i could get away with it. really i think it depends on the person..

hmm where did you hear that japanese people dislike foreigners to the most extremes? these forums filled with it?, go as you do, they wouldnt care if you dressed that way, everyone over there dresses with individualism which is extremely amazing to me compared to here in the United States.

i mean you may just be dressing as your country or area does(they wouldnt necessarily know), thats like me walking up in some american brand of clothes with polo jeans, most people even non-japanese over there wont throw stones lol.

unless your somewhere your not suppose to be.

actually its all over these forums and it was really confusing because i keep seeing two diffrent things. mostly it was just that they were really rude to forigin people. but really thats everywhere i guess. i just dont really want to be laughed at or something.

never heard that Japanese people are rude to foreigners... i never had such experience when i was there..

i guess when you dress like that, you are attracting and people look at you all the time.. aren't you used to that? maybe Japanese will stare at you too, but i don't believe they could be rude or even dangerous for you...

I and many of my friends have worn gothic and lolita clothes in Japan. Being Japanese or foreign doesn't seem to matter. The two most important things I've found are...

1) How you look in the clothes.
Your race is a tiny thing in comparison to whether you look good in what you're wearing. If you wear the clothes well, you'll receive many compliments like, "Oh, how pretty! You look like a doll!" But if you look bad -- poorly fitting and mismatched clothes, bad posture, sloppy hair and makeup -- yes, people will make fun of you. If you're not sure whether you're pulling off the look well enough, submit a picture of yourself wearing one of your outfits to the most critical English-language lolita internet forum you can find. If you pass muster with the online communities, you shouldn't have any trouble in Japan.

2) Where you're wearing the clothes.
Regardless of how popular they might seem from overseas, gothic and lolita clothes are weird in Japan. You can wear weird clothes in the parts of major cities where other young people wearing weird clothes are hanging out. If you wear lolita in the suburbs or countryside, you'll stand out and people will think you're strange. This is true regardless of your race.

In short, I wouldn't worry about being a foreigner when it comes to wearing lolita in Japan. Just make sure you look your best.
