Does an outsider have a chance?

Thanks so much for all the responses to this topic. I have talked with her about some of this and I think we have come to a better understanding of each other. She has relented a little with her stance that I have no business commenting about her culture and family with the understanding that I mean absolutley no harm and only wish to show interest. I have taken into consideration that she does feel threatened by my desire to debate (mentioned above) and I try to let things go before things get out of hand. She is very interesting in that she will debate many things but will not dabate much at all about Japan. Well I can live with that. I am enjoying this journey of discovery and I find her and her culture facinating. I think things will go well for us. Keep the comments coming!

Just asking for a bit of clarification here. Are you saying that you agreed with her not to comment on her family and her culture because she thinks it is none of your business or ...........

I do not want to twist your words in any way shape or form. There are a few points I would like to make, because depending on where you live after you get married some of these things may very well go by the wayside and go there rather quickly as well, all depending on how well you speak, read and write Japanese and her English. Does she debate you about American culture and or your family in America?

Also I am a bit confused; "I have taken into consideration that she does feel threatened by my desire to debate...." and She is very interested in that she will debate many things but not about Japan"

..........Is it ok to think that she only feels threatened when you want to debate or discuss about cultural and family issues related to here in Japan?

In Europe, you can see strong cultural gaps just by crossing a linguistic border, so that people have a quite different lifestyle and behaviour just 20km apart from each others. These cultural differences go back to centuries, well before the USA existed, and hardly change with time (well, they evolve, but all at the same time, keeping the differences) because they are so deep-rooted.

Thanks for clarifying Maciano. Your comment is brilliant!

Ok then, What can I say about the whole thing? My english is not perfect bacause my father, american citizen, couldn`t be bothered to teach me how to speak it properly. He was too busy to improve his italian. Yes, Mike-Cash I`m half American, half Italian. I`m crap at writing, I do get confused with the different languages...

My father moved to Italy as an exchange student when he was 26. He did his PhD in Rome and now, after 32 years, he is a a professor of Anglo-american Language and Culture at Rome University.

He always says that USA is a Country made out of Countries, a meltin pot of different cultres from all over the world, and as a matter of fact, there is no american culture as such.
I`ve been to the States quite a few times. All my relatieves are from California, Irish descent. They all refer to Ireland as their own country, even if is some of them have never been there. I know more about Irish traditions than I do about americans (?)

I grew up in Italy. When I moved to Japan, my father said: you`re not going to last more than 4 years. The italian in you will come up when you least expect it. I thought he was talking nonsense, but after three years it really happened...

Now I`m in England, but still in Europe. The Italian in me is really happy of being here, the Anglo-saxon in me is having a blast.

ciao

I have a good story for you. It's called ツ「テ・M窶堙娯?吮??ツ」 by ナ?Hツ静ャ窶板エ窶抃窶ーテョ.

Oh, sorry about that. It's called "Yabu no Naka" by Akutagawa Ryunosuke.
