Just a tad... If you modify things greatly, such as have Jesus breed Jesus-babies that carry the same title as him, but without the reincarnation divine power shtick, then you'd be a few steps closer. It really isn't comparable. I'd say it is more comparable to ritualistic pagan practices in Western Europe than to a monotheistic (well, kind of) religion.
From what I've seen with most of the general population, Shinto is more ritual and tradition than an actual "belief system."

As the State religion for centuries, Shinto had a profound impact on the development of Japanese society.
Shinto beliefs were responsible, along with Confucianism, for the development of the samurais' bushido code. Among the most noteworthy beliefs are:
-Knowledge of what is right and wrong can be found in your heart.
-Purity of spirit and mind.
*Misuses of mind include:
Greed
Covetedness
Anger
Arrogance
Selfishness
-Daily offerings to the kami
-Duty to others (but not strangers)
BTW, the kami is not quite the same as the western concept of god. (This confused me at first, too.) The kami has somewhat lesser powers than an almighty magical being, but the kami are everywhere, in the rock, in the water, even in the utensils one uses. And they have the power influence outcomes in individual lives.

This important information seems to be missing in this forum, so I'd like to post it here.
Pick up the ladle with your right hand and fill with water. Use about half of the ladle amount to wash your left hand and the other half for your right hand. Leave a small amount to rinse your mouth (Don't sip from the ladel, but pour the water into your and bring water to your mouth). Spit out the water. Rinse the ladle handle with remaining water by letting water flow down it. Replace ladle, open side down.
Then appoach the alter.
Correct form when praying at a Shinto shrine.
1. Bow before the alter.
2. Put your offering in the box. (The amount is up to you.)
3. Ring the bell once, gently.
4. Bow twice.
5. Make you request to the kami with your hands in prayer. (Optional - Some believers will clap twice before making their request.)
6. Bow once.
7. Leave.

I'm not sure if animism is universal, but I think Shinto is very close to animism, thinking that everything has a life/spirit in it.
A craftsman will also put the soul or spirit into his work like katana, cake, everything so is Robot.
