I was curious, because the founder of Tenrikyo was once a follower of Shinto . And it's apparently called by some a sect of Shinto. But also called "markedly different".

So different that they don't worship Shinto Kami maybe? Or do they still worship the Shinto Kami. I really want to know...

This is from my ancient notes (I've been studying Japan for almost a lifetime). I'm afraid I don't know the source:

"Shinto encourages simplicity and cleanliness as signs of inner goodness. There is a steady emphasis on spiritual and physical purity. Shinto asks its followers to be pure in heart and mind and to be grateful for the blessings of kami. How they follow these obligations is left to the consciousness of the individual.

The purpose of Shinto worship is to maintain a close harmony among people, nature, and kami."

Tenrikyo doctrine teaches that wrong use of the mind causes illness and purification of the mind relieves it.

Eight wrong uses of the mind: miserliness or ungenerous behavior, covetousness, hatred, self-love, enmity, anger, greed, and arrogance.

The Founder of Tenrikyo, Miki Nakayama, was once a follower of Buddhism. To my basic knowledge, when Tenrikyo was started, Japan didn't want to recognize Tenrikyo as a religion and so the followers needed to have it become a sect of Shinto on paper, in order for the authorities to allow them to do their Tenrikyo activities, mainly doing the service since they were stopped each time they did that by taking Miki Nakayama to prison.

Tenrikyo is a monotheistic religion who believes God as a Parent who created human beings to see us lead the joyous life.

In other words, Tenrikyo has nothing to do with Shinto.
