I hope this pointless rant is allowed, and I hope its in the right place... Anyway this is a rant on my feeling towards fangirls/fanboys of Dir en Grey and what Dir en Grey has done to contribute to what I feel would harm the message they claim to be saying.

Also it was 3 pages in my word editing program so I decided to just post the link to it(its from the journal in which I keep all my rants, but the link should take you directly to the post):

Rants and whatnot - August 10th, 2004

That was....interesting to say the least. I understand it was a rant, but it was a little jumbled up and a bit confusing to read (thoughts flying everywhere). But there were some points that I liked. Such as the backstabbing part. Nice rant nonetheless.

Yes I was actually going to try and put it in a form that was more readable but believe me, after ranting on for 2 days you get tired of it, so I had no motive to go fix it, and ideas came to mind as I wrote and whatnot, so my apologies for the confusion. And thankyou for the comments. As for the back stabbing part, I'm glad you liked it. But, I really am curious as to why fans go crazy at the oddest things.

that was a really good rant, and I admire your points akaisha. keep on writing ^-^

Well thankyou very much Suzu, I think I just got to much empty space in my head and to much (un)free time to fill it up, heh. But I'm glad you liked it. My point of making it was actually to hear other people's views on the subject, but there's always tomorrow for someone to do that ^_^

Akaisha, I dont say this very much, but you've earned the luxury of hearing it.

I like you.

Also, do you know exactly what the middle finger means? Its not *NOT* a sign of disrespect in the original context...more or less.

It started during one of the many French/British conflicts of the middle ages. French fighters, when capturing warriors of the British legions *usually archers* would cut off their trigger-fingers *crossbowmen* and send them back home in some instances.

During some conflicts, to boost morale, British fighters would display their middle *trigger* finger to the enemy French troops to send the message to them: "We are able, and ready to fight!"

That was the original meaning.

Oh, and you noted Malice Mizer, and Moi Dix Mois look being gothic and DeG isnt. Then you mentioned you werent gonna get into that...please do! In many instances you seem to run your thoughts parallel to my own, and I'd like to know what you think.

Well, thank you Winter. Now that you have informed me you don't say it often, then may I be proud to earn that luxury.

Also my sister had mentioned the middle finger's meaning in its original meaning during that time, but I didn't listen to all she had to say. And though I suppose in a way Totchi's middle finger could mean the same, I had commented on the fact what it means now in America, and I would only think he meant the same, since now days flipping someone off seems almost appropriate.. in an odd and twisted way... But thank you still for that information. Though what I wonder is how is it not a sign of disrespect? You see with them saying that they are able and ready to fight its basically saying they are ready to kill, and in killing some family always suffers a loss, and from my understanding its very disrespectful to kill someone esspecially with a family. Though I unerstand in times of war you are more a number thena human being but to the families, its not the case. Therefore in a way it is still an insult.

Well I certainly will make another post on this thread, with my views on that. So I'll hop along to that. And its very nice that your thoughts match my own in a sense, thats the reason I write these things is to see if people agree or don't. So thank you once again for that.

Okay so this is on why Dir en Grey is not a gothic band. Now, besides the fact they flat out said it, allow me to express my views on a gothic band vs a visual kei band. Now allot of people automatically assume visual kei = gothic(except if you go to crazy colors with hair, such as green... and wear a pink shirt or something.. then that changes everything). And no, that is not the case. Allow me to take a moment to define my views on the classifications of rock music.
You have your old school rock such as Elvis and Chuck Berry, just your old school classics. The original style of rock n窶 roll, that fast driving catchy beat. As time went on the idea of rock changed however to more of the style you窶囘 classify as alternative rock. Now bands such as CREED and Nickleback and whatnot are what people think of when you say rock. Then of course there is what is considered alternative rock by most of today窶冱 youth. Now considering I don窶冲 keep up to standards for music in any country I窶冦 just gonna use Gackt as an example here for what you窶囘 consider alternative rock. Then you have your hard rock or your headbanger窶冱 rock. I mean bands such as the older band KISS or Metallica and in some cases Nirvana even. Then moving along we have punk rock, and to be honest the only example I can think of is the name printed on my shirt currently, Limp Bizkit. Then of course we come to the wonders of gothic rock. Now allow me to explain something, there are 2 types of gothic rock. You have your punk-gothic rock and your gothic rock. Punk-gothic rock is just that its punk rock only a bit more elegant and rather then filling our virgin ears with swears and horrifying grammar we have the irregular beats and screams of the music with expressions of hate or as I窶冦 about to get to in normal gothic rock, fantasy. Now with typical gothic rock, its more elegant, the beats aren窶冲 so irregular they have a bit of that but it flows more freely into itself and the lyrics do express pain and whatnot but they do it in a more coded form often preaching about fantasy worlds, one in particular that people would know as the underworld. They sing of death and blood and monsters and nightmares. That is what a gothic band does. Now I can窶冲 quite say visual kei is a classification of rock because rock = music, visual kei = appearance. So visual kei is just an add on to any rock band(well I should say japanese rock band, considering visual kei isn窶冲 used as a classification in american rock). Now you read lyrics from Malice Mizer and you really have a range of songs(really depends on the vocalist) but you have songs such as Au Revoir, which I can actually in a way compare to some Dir en Grey songs such as Akuro no oka and Ain窶冲 afraid to die and a few others but I think I窶冦 getting my point across. What I窶冦 saying is with an example like that there can be a connection but where as Malice Mizer used lyrics of a memory Dir en Grey窶冱 lyrics more resembled a process and feelings of guilt which I didn窶冲 see in Au Revior, but not just that song I don窶冲 see guilt in any Malice Mizer songs, so its more or less that they describe a feeling and times that had passed but they do it in a way of memory and of loving those memories rather then feeling bad about them or feeling that that somehow connects to 窶?tupidity窶 of humans for having such an emotion. Then going along with my thoughts on fantasy you can take it in very literal terms with Malice Mizer窶冱 song Bois de merveilles, but that's really taking it at face value. I think while Malice Mizer had Gackt as their vocalist the songs didn窶冲 as greatly go into the gothic sense just a typical alternative rock band that happened to be all for visual kei. After they got Klaha I think things definitely changed. Taking the most obvious example, Beast of Blood, you can tell its message is very encrypted under the heavy wording of metaphors in a way, and it really shows the fantasy gothic/dark way of lyric writing. But more then just the lyrics its the music style that makes gothic bands stand out. The music is of course rock(I窶冦 starting to think rock is just where the left over music goes) but its by far the most different of the rock styles, and I stated that earlier so I won窶冲 go back into it. But as I had said it definitely assumes a more elegant form despite if its gothic punk or just typical goth. When you read Dir en Grey窶冱 lyrics, as I said before its more of feelings of guilt and selfishness. But I窶况e stated enough on their lyrics to define the difference, but one more thing I must say is that Dir en Grey has a very powerful message and I can tell it has a message where as when I hear Malice Mizer I don窶冲 quite get that, I feel Malice Mizer is more a form of entertainment and thought(once again a form of entertainment) where as Dir en Grey tells a story and they really have a message, and I know I窶况e said that so many times, but I can窶冲 stress it enough. Now music style for Dir en Grey has really changed and they窶况e kept the same vocalist. I think when they started out they were more of the irregular beat and the unusual rock style to accent their lyrics(making them the more of punk gothic rock), but now I think they rely on Kyo to accent the lyrics and tell the story rather then allowing the music to do it. Dir en Grey harbors more of the rock feel that I don窶冲 get when I hear Malice Mizer, maybe its that deal on elegance again, I don窶冲 know, but that's my thought on that. Now I know in my original rant I commented on Moi Dix Mois as well, and all I can say is, substitute any time I talked of Malice Mizer when they had Klaha for Moi Dix Mois and you窶决e good to go. I hope that explains the difference in why Malice Mizer and Moi Dix Mois are a gothic band and Dir en Grey is a rock band. 😌 that was tiring to write, so now nap time :snore:

In the older Nordic cultures, the battlefield was the ultimate honor to be on. To fight under the guise of Valhalla, and the Nordic fighter-gods of yore.

Many of the ancient Nordic cultures and customs were adopted from maurauding and travelling barbarians. Eventually, a good portion of pre-dark aged Europe had some sort of honor lying in the concept of men fighting on the battlefield. Fighting for their King, and their people.

To inform the enemy that you are ready to fight, kill, and die for your King, and your honor was in no real way a sign of disrespect. It was a thing to be adored in a way, and undoubtedly, to be respected.

You have to remember the middle age fighters' eye looked at battle very differently than the modern-day civilian.

As for your previous post; again I liked it. Didnt agree with much of any of it, but still, I liked it.

Now I'd like to express my thoughts on music.

Did you know that rock didnt start with Elvis, Chuck Berry, and the like?

Of course you did. But did you know how it really started?

Most of the greats of modern rock, started in the south by imitating their black predecessors. Rock 'n roll was actually a southern Black term meaning 'sex'.

Anyway, even Elvis, whom pioneered rock to caucasian america, copied it directly from the gospel services of the many black churches of the south he visited.

Moving on. The term goth, as you probably know, came from the original Goth barbarians, that eventually settled in parts of what is now known as modern day Spain.

Eventually, the gothic era *which was actually in the days of Homer, Aristotle, and many other out-of-the-box thinkers* was dubbed into the gothic times of 14th century Victorian Europe. This only happened after the 2nd 'official' gothic era of the late 1700's to modern day.

The term gothic, after the seperation of the Goths and Visagoths of pre-Roman authority, literally translates as to 'the one who thinks'. The modern gothic minds arent actually poets such as Poe, or authors such as Mary Wallstonecraft *later known as Mary Shelly*.

Gothic, for many ages, was an endearing quality of alchemists, philosophers, and theologists.

So in that context, of gothic meaning the odd-thinkers, and philosophers, its safe to say that dwelling on the more macabre aspects of life is not what makes the thinker gothic. In fact, it makes the thinker stoic, asoteric, and mundane, as well as uncreative; the exact opposite of what it means to have a gothic mind.

With that said, the 'quintessential' gothic band of overseas, Malice Mizer, would actually be more appropriately named 'fantasy-victorian' music.

I think the solo-artist, Tsunku, would be more deserving of the title 'gothic', actually.

Ah, Akaisha, you rock. I never get to have these partially stimulating conversations without it turning into flame-wars with the normal members around here.

Well thanx for the history lesson, but in my views on the music I stand by what I say.

As for your last comment. I do? As for them not turning into flame-wars to be honest I'm suprised they haven't.

Lol, well I can't say I'd call it an intelligent conversation, I mean sure it has a decent amount of intelligence(gathered by studying) and in a way its a conversation, but its more of a history lesson. As for saying he's deprived of all intelligent conversation I can't quite get what you mean. I can think of 2 ways of viewing that and thats either that he never puts up an intelligent conversation anywhere, or no one bothers to converse with him. Either way I'd say people should thank their lucky stars for that, I mean not to be offensive to anyone, but when the first line of text about 70% of the time is a history lesson when you never claimed you were trying to be correct, you were just speaking from your own point of views on things, then it gets rather annoying.

Akaisha - awesome rant! I love it! It was great mostly because I've been on Otakon's boards, and keep hearing from people you call "rabid yaoi fanboys/girls" who all want to see Dir en Grey at Otakon next year. This is a great reprieve from that. I myself am definitely more into J-Pop than J-Rock (yeah, I enjoyed the Angela concert at Otakon MUCH MUCH more than the L'Arc~en~Ciel one), but I'm glad that you stepped forward to help us understand some pertinent parts of Dir en Grey.

First off thank you Onmyoji for the comments. I must say I've never been to the Otakon boards mainly because I get depressed over the fact I can never to to conventions considering where I live and the fact NOTHING ever comes around here. But I don't think that the people requesting Dir en Grey to come to Otakon are all the rabid yaoi fangirls/fanboys. I mean there is a distinct difference between two. And I think thats just an obvious one. As for my message being a reprieve of their requests I can see how one can gather that from my rant without my saying it, but for the sake of discussion I'll state it. I think the only reason japanese bands come to america is once again an obvious given, for more popularity. And popularity = money. Now the world seems to like to make me wrong, such as a month before L'Arc~en~Ciel decided to come to america I had told my friend they would never come because my views on foreign bands on america is selfihness and money, and what would you know, they came to america. So I'm not saying Dir en Grey won't come just so they will, lol... okay that wasn't funny, but anyway, I think Dir en Grey isn't as much about popularity and advertising. I mean I'm not all over the japanese media so I couldn't really tell you how much advertising they do for themselves, but judging what I've heard they don't do that. And because they don't, they're the type of band who cares more about what they're saying and because of that there's really no use to come to america. A shame that is to american fans, but its only true.
More or less I think allot of people already understand what I'm saying, I've just not seen anyone really state it. And originally this was just going to be a simple rant that I showed to my friends but after seeing all the fangirls/fanboys that are here on this forum, as well as other forums, and because of that I figured might as well show them how silly I find them, and maybe hope that they'd realize it too.
