def in Japan: a comic diary

I just read your comics. Awesome stuff; thanks for making it!

I also have difficulty getting the art of it, it reads more like content-delivery...
Light novels not your thing? I'd assume there are some light novels that are not that difficult, though still harder than the easiest manga.

Well, when I read in Japanese, much of the style of the prose is missed. I can't really say who is great with words.

In English, I like reading Vladmir Nobokov and Philip K Dick. Nabokov is a master of prose, while Dick was never very good with that, and mainly interesting for ideas. The idea of reading novels in a second language is unappealing since I can't really make those sorts of distinctions.

By the way, how literate would you say you are in Japanese, and how long/hard have you worked at it?

I studied really hard for two years to get me fluent enough to talk and travel comfortably. Then I studied a lot more casually for about three years, learning kanji, trying to broaden my range. I haven't studied for a few years now. I use Japanese at home with the missus, and need it 100% when we're at the in-laws, and about 50% at work. I'm not fluent, but my listening comprehension is quite good, reading comprehension is pretty good, and my speaking is not elegant, but does the job. I think I spoke better a few years back when I lived with my in-laws for six months. I was really living in Japanese at that point.

I see! Thanks for the info -- I'm starting to worry about my progress in Japanese since my goal is to be more fluent in the language than average, whatever that may be (for gaijins, of course). I absolutely love language and the way you're able to articulate your feelings with a broad vocabulary and such. It's nothing against my father, but he was an immigrant who came to America knowing no English, and it always sort of bothered me (a tiny bit) that he stopped practicing and seeking out improvement once he was just barely fluent enough to get around.

Did you have much of a personal interest in reaching fluency, or was it, for lack of a better term, out of obligation to your situation?

My goal was a difficult life, of sorts, more than just coming to Japan. I was 28, bored, and not seeing a bright future, so I wanted to put myself in an adverse situation to force myself to grow. I chose Japan and set a five year target to speak better than a little, and the Japanese level 2 test was my goal. Level one is basically fluent, and I'm a ways off of that.

I can only focus on so much at a time, and the past year has been me focusing on my art, to the detriment of my Japanese study.

That's a pretty admirable motivation, I think. It seems that our intents were and are similar.

You know you're failing when you yell at your kid that you're kid that you're a good father.

Consider this a collaboration with my daughter... This is already a treasured memento:

Lazily drawn, lazily colored, but I like the sentiment.

A good deed a day

Lazily drawn, lazily colored, but I like the sentiment.

Brilliant! Plenty of opportunity in Japanese cities to become that kind of hero: towels, scarves, mittens, wallets, train passes, mobiles, etc... it always feels good.

It looks like May is turning into nature month, just as April was babysitting month... Not on purpose, but it's interesting when a theme appears.

Your style has been growing on me more and more since I saw it for the first time. I've got to say that this and your comics like in post #112, have such a simple, yet pure happiness to them. Not to be corny or anything, but they feel like a little light amidst the dark, or a little spot of zen amidst a whole lot of chaos -- A reminder that it's the little things that truly make life bearable and happy even in spite of the the fact that the big picture of every day life tends seem a lot less appealing.

It's much appreciated! The first two months was getting comfortable with real drawing again (not relying too much on computers), then getting the writing as simple and stripped down as possible, and while coloring is still an after-thought, I feel like I'm getting the coloring to a place where it adds to the strip rather than just fills it in. If you look at the first dozen strips in this thread, they aren't nearly as good as the output of the last two months.

It's a work in progress, but I'm happy to see it getting to a smoother, more comfortable place. It's taught me a lot about process as well. When I was younger I was all about incomplete ideas and I rarely finished anything, and now I'm forcing myself to do things, and the progress is satisfying. Progress comes through the at of doing, not simply considering it. I try to imagine a basketball player getting better simply by watching people play basketball and considering it rather than doing, and it's a preposterous idea. Same with art. (and language study for that matter)

The process is zen though. Though I consider some things consciously, when writing, it has to feel right. The rhythm from panel one to four, plus the title. There is a certain kind of music... I was called pretentious by someone online recently (nobody I actually know, of course, this is the Internet where criticism comes cheap), and ultimately, I'd rather aspire to do something I'm proud of than to aim very low and apathetically, claiming I'm attempting nothing, even at the cost of being called pretentious by people (I don't know).

More to come, and I have a bigger summer comic project that should make use of Sapporo. It remains to be seen if I can muster the energy to get that done in good time though, while keeping these going too.

Awesome! Your drawings are simply awesome! Haha!!! I wish I were that talented.

Don't worry abt bad thoughts, I think it's normal if you have that kind of thoughts where you see a handicapped person and feel bad for them and then you feel bad for thinking that you're lucky that you're not handicapped. Then when you see a rich person, you feel bad for becoming green with envy and wishing you had that kind of wealth ^^
