I too was shocked to hear about his sudden freakish death (you can count the number of people killed by stingrays in Australia on one hand). He was not a Timothy Treadwill so people saying he "deserved it" is uncalled for in my opinion. Whether you approved of his methods or not, the man WAS passionate about his profession. He was first and foremost a warrior for the planet, a true conservationist, and his love for all things wild was truly genuine. RIP Stevie.

Deep down there may be a sliver of good intentions or educational value but the commercialism, push for ratings and flat out brash arrogrance practically guarantees a careless moment that requires the animal to have to defend itself.

Your talking about a completely different situation. Steve was not swimming down there tormenting that Stingray. What that idiot Seigfried was doing was tormenting the Lions and other Animals on a regular basis. They could not stand him and could not wait to have at him sooner or later. The Stingray may have been defending itself, but I am sure it was not thinking, "This is Steve Irwin, the crocodile guy. I am going to get him!"

I enjoyed watching him so now and then, and especially listening to his omoroii (funny) voice was just funny. I can also remember when I was in Noosa Heads (Australia) that I could take some tour to his Crocodile park, we did the Kano tour instead of Steve's park

When you have a job as he had, you know it can go wrong some day.

Also erronneous. Treadwell was eaten alive by an old hungry bear because of his misanthropy. He had a bad experience in a California airport on his way back to the "human world" while most of his bear friends went into hibernation. He flew back to Alaska way later than he had ever been there before, and the only bear that hung around was an old one who hadn't yet found enough food to get it through hibernation. He got too close to this bear with whom he was not too familiar, and it did what a hungry bear does when easy prey is within arm's reach. His foolishness was the cause of his own and his girlfriend's death.

Steve Irwin accidentally spooked a normally docile creature, and its relatively harmless attack caught him in one of the few spots that can make it fatal. This can only be described as a freak accident. Yes he put himself there, but with a full compliment of Animal experts and a camera crew. He might've been a little too passionate about his work, but Treadwell was a psychopath.
