Here in the US, you can't watch animal shows without seeing Steve Irwin and his Aussie accent. Guess he was diving when a sting ray stinger pierced his chest & heart. GOOGLE for more details if you wish.

Unbelieveable. The man handled dangerous animals, yet was killed by a fairly harmless one.

Live by the sword, die by the sword! Everyone knew something like this would happen to him someday right?

Guess not only humans hated his annoying comment. But he was a cool guy afterall. T'is sad he had to get killed in such a way

He kind of asked for it having lived so dangerously.. Too bad he had to leave two kids behind.

Reminds me of the South Park episode with some Aussie tv-personality that is supposed to be "Steve":

AUSSIE
As we steer our boat down , looking
for these dangerous predatorsツ… Boy,
there's a king croc right here. He
must be four meters; 12, 13 feet long
at least. This croc has enough power
in its jaws to rip my head right off.

KENNY
(Oh, no!)

AUSSIE
I've got to be careful. So, what I'm
gonna do is sneak up on it and jam my
thumb in its butthole.

STAN
Holy crap. dude!

AUSSIE
If I get bit out here, I'm 200 kilometers
from the nearest hospital: I'd better
be real careful jamming my thumb in
its butthole. Oh, boy, it's pissed
off now.

KYLE
Go, dude, go!

AUSSIE
I'm gonna jam my thumb it its butthole
now! This should really piss it off!
Oh, yeah, that piossed it off, all
right! I've gotta be careful!

STAN
This guy rules!

KENNY
(He actually killed it!)

CARTMAN
I told you guys.

AUSSIE
Well! That was quite an angry croc!
But I managed to escape with only a
few bruises and a shattered left testicle.
Next week we'll look for more of these
beautiful creatures, so we can learn
more about them by pissing them off
immensely. Thanks for watching.

I forget what movie it was, but there was a spoof where he was sneaking up on the croc and telling everyone "I'm going to sneak up behind this croc so we can get a better look at it."

The croc said "As soon as he gets close enough I'm going to bite his hand right off!"

Sure enough, just as he got close, the croc bit his hand off...I don't remember the quotes exactly, but it was funny to watch. What was that movie???

Dr. Dolittle 2.. Funny movie indeed. :D

I hope he had a very good life insurance policy (for his wife and kids).

What a way to go >.>

He dealt with lions, anacondas and of course crocodiles, but a sting ray is what kills him? That just ain't right.

I read a little while ago that the whole incident was caught on film.

Live by the sword, die by the sword! Everyone knew something like this would happen to him someday right?
exactly! but it is sad, and he is gone far too soon, and left far too young kids.

I, being lost over here in the 'unreal' world, have actually never heard of the person--AFAIK--but only know the Japanese animal scientist with the long hair and buck teeth.

I was surprize to hear of the incident though. . . strange. It is sad, yes, because it is real.

On a humours note, I wonder if this will bring up the ole Crocodile (sp?) Dandy re-runs? MM

I saw it on the yahoo headlines yesterday and the first thing that went through my head was "it's about time!". I mean, it's sad and all, but he kind of deserved it.

I doubt very much he deserved it, but he loved animals and died doing what he loved--sharing his passion with the world.

I was talking to my father about his unfortunate demise today, and he had an interesting comment: "It's people like Steve Irwin who make this world lively and interesting; they make the world around, but if everyone were like him, it would quickly spin out of control!"

My condolences to his family.

Oh please! He spent his life pissing animals off! Besides, who knows how many people got hurt pretending they were him. Obviously no one ever told the guy there are just certain things you don't mess with.

That's an awfully hard-lined stance to take on someone who was an essentially a much-more animated Jack Hannah. Anyone imitating dangerous stunts they see on television, especially those they are warned against attempting, are foolish and deserve what is "coming" to them just as much, if not more than an experienced professional.

Steve loved the Animals he dealt with. He was not out there harming them. When was he ever shown harming one? From what I understand, he was a pure conservationist.

Deserved it?

That's an awfully insensitive thing to say at this time don't you think?

Yeah, I don't care how passionate he was about conversation -- these animals are wild and their boundaries and space and power have to be respected absolutely. He is not one of them and they are, or should be,
free-roaming, not on this earth to be grabbed or jumped on as props in his documentary. The two worlds are totally distinct.

Well, one time he had his baby girl (she was still a baby then) close when he was feeding a croc for crying out loud. He was a damn fruitloop! He kinda went too far even if he loved animals. Anyways, that's my 2 cent.

I'd say so. I don't think he "deserved" it, but I wasn't too surprised to hear the news.

Evidently the stingrays barb got him right in the chest. The entire thing was being taped as it happened. Here is a link to the story, but sad to say that there are many grammar errors in the story. Who edits this stuff anyway?

google news link

Experts believe his death is only the third caused by a stingray in Australian waters ever.

Could this be because most people are more careful?

"The animal world has finally taken its revenge on Irwin, but probably not before a whole generation of kids in shorts seven sizes too small has learned to shout in the ears of animals with hearing ten times more acute than theirs, determined to become millionaire animal-loving zoo-owners in their turn."

It seems as though not everyone liked his shows??

I'd say so. I don't think he "deserved" it, but I wasn't too surprised to hear the news.
It was inevitable. The same thing that happened to the idiot showman magician Siegfried in Las Vegas being mauled by a lion as part of his act. Deep down there may be a sliver of good intentions or educational value but the commercialism, push for ratings and flat out brash arrogrance practically guarantees a careless moment that requires the animal to have to defend itself.

Regardless of if you liked or disliked what Mr. Irwin did for a living, disrepecting the recently deceased is just plain low class and wrong. No one deserves to die like that, and so young too. I was genuinely shocked to have heard about Mr. Irwin's death yesterday. No doubt he'll be missed, even if he wasn't universally liked.
