If these girls in those so called little on room bars are under 16, doesnt this make it a case of Paedophilila? Does Japanese society turn a blind eye to it and try to brush it under the carpet so to speak as if they dont want to admit it exists?

I dont think there are underage girls working in these establishments but I dont know for sure. I also would not want to make any unfounded accusations either. My point though is this, law enforcement here leaves much to be desired when it comes to issues like this.

If a women was walking the street openly soliciting odds are she would get caught and arrested, but in these other establishments it wouldnt happen.

Thank You, that does alter things, if they are not under age it is a different form of prostitution. They are brothels so to speak and if they are controlled by the 'underground' then Police powers are different if corruption is involved.

And yes sometimes Law enforcement leaves much to be desired, even over here in the UK.

I don't think its possible to really separate the idea of 'what is' and 'what should be' here. Almost any given country in the world has some form of prostitution that exists either in the open or behind closed doors. Laws are readily available by which one could be prosecuted if one stepped outside the normal avenues of securing such services but those are rare cases.

What it really comes down to is a country's willingness to act on the laws that protect the vulnerable. In Canada and the US for example child prostitution exists but in the most subversive and illegal manner. It's by no way institutionalized or accepted like it seems to be in some other countries. Thailand comes to mind as a place where its fairly openly available (by reputation.) The reason why the West has achieved a different reputation is by heavily persecuting anyone involved, legally and socially. These days internet sting operations are arresting record numbers of people around the world in terms of child porn, and child sex rings are high on local law enforcement agendas. Offenders are named publicly and a registry is maintained. Conversely, due to whatever culturally specific difference, some other countries choose not to be so gun-ho about it. Therefore it spreads out.

A similar case could be made for marijuana use in Japan vs. Canada.. in Japan it's quite frowned upon whereas in Canada it's being considered for decriminalization. The dynamics and involvement of vulnerable persons in child prostitution vs. marijuana use is different but generally it reminds us that different countries with different cultures simply do things differently!

In Japan it is a major business as well, maybe not as publicized as Thailand but the sex business is HUGE here.

I understand the point you are making but just to let you know, if you didnt already know this, it isnt just frowned upon here it is strongly prohibited and weeded out......when found.

Gay rape is not covered by Article 177, but covered by Article 176 of the penal law here.

A highschool boy was arrested after he became a pimp for girls.
Today a yakuza, a Korean massage parlor owner, 4 in total, were arrested on allegations of human traficking. Many media covered the news, for it was the first time the anti-traficking law applied to a Japanese woman.
