Cheap hotels in Tokyo

I'm planning to go to Tokyo around February, I think, and would like to find a cheap hotel or hostel (do they have these?) for one week stay.

Any recommendations? I'm planning on sightseeing Tokyo, and shopping. :P I wonder if there are chep hotels around the underground stations, or something like this.

Travelled to Japan recently and stayed at a hotel in Ueno. It's 'Ueno Touganeya hotel'.

It's located very near the Ueno train station. It's only a 2 minutes walk from the station. Want more information on it?
 
I usually stay at the Hotel Asia Center of Japan. I like it because it is centrally located on the Ginza Line and the hotel is located about 2 blocks from the Aoyama Itchome Station. It is about $50-60/night and has a nice buffet breakfast in their own restaurant for 900 yen.

Ueno Touganeya Hotel

The hotel is around a 2 minutes walk from the Ueno train station. Room rates for a single is around 7770 Yen per room. The rooms have just enough space for moving about to facilities inside the room. It is about 12 square metres to be precise! Amenities are daily supplied.

A small restaurant is located near the lobby area. Vending machines are placed at floors 4 and 6. There is a washer and a dryer too at the 6th floor. It's a DIY thing. There is also a free internet sevice computer to use at the lobby. You're advised to limit your usage of the computer at 30 minutes. That's to be considerate, but not many people uses it.

Other than all I've said, the hotel's sitauted in a convenient place. Even the Ueno station provides a few eating places. You can go down to Hard Rock cafe for a drink or two or even to the bakery there for a light meal. You should better try the Japanese ice-cream packed in a heart-shaped biscuit. There is a small grocery store there too and a few restaurants and shops on the second floor of the station.

From a few minutes walk from Ueno Touganeya Hotel, you can walk to the busy market streets for some cheap buys. Best sellers are the crabs. But bare in mind, you can't bring those crabs home! :eek: Other than food stuff, there are other clothing and accessories shops. Some are boutiques and arts galleries. Along the streets on the main road, you might find good restaurants too. I went to the Indian Restaurant (Samrat Indian Cuisine). Despite the expenses, it's worth the try!

I have no idea, but it shouldn't be difficult to learn just enough kanji to navigate and make use of the site.
 
If you are looking for "hotels," the cheap ones are usually located in the eastern and northeastern areas of Tokyo that are more folksy and rustic (appropriate description?) compared to the so-called "trendy" areas of Shibuya, Roppongi, etc. They are usually located a bit far from railway stations but usually offer maps and directions, so it shouldn't be a serious problem.

This is the page on cheap hotels from the website Mike introduced. The rooms are clean and decently furbished, very often also with Internet access. Their rates are around 5000yen per person (or couple):

Otherwise, you have the choice of guesthouses that cater to foreign toursts, especially young people. They are cheap, and some of them are very popular:

Mike, I'm not sure where do I want to stay. I don't know Tokyo. For sure I'm definetely going to Harajuku, Shibuya and Asakusa on my in-Tokyo trips. But I'm comfortable with having to ride even an hour to get there, it doesn't bother me (as long there are all day tickets). :P

BTW, what are the rush hours in underground?

Wow, I didn't even know there is something like guesthouses O.o That's quite interesting.

plenty cheap, from around 3200 yen/night.
Not really near anything interesting but easy enough to get around from nearby kayabacho station. Very handy for akhihabara and not too hard to get to shibuya or shinjuku with only one change. Try to avoid winter though, being right on the river the rooms are freezing and the aircon/heater unit does little to help. Oh, and the beds are sensationally hard.
English speaking staff though so thats helpful.
 
I've stayed in Hotel New Koyo and Taito Ryokan, both have English websites just a google away. Cheap and clean. Can't ask for more :) New Koyo has TVs in rooms also.
 
I've stayed in the Sakura Hotel several times.

It's in Jimbocho, which while perhaps not high on the places to see, is not a bad place and very convenient for the rest of the city. Walking distance from the Imperial palace, near to several overland stations (eg Suidobashi, which is also home to the Tokyo Dome complex).

They are very easy to deal with and I've found their booking service very prompt.

I also stayed in Sakura Hotel, Amos is right there is not much in Jimbocho, but my BIG problem was getting all the way back to Jimbocho before the trains stopped for the night! It SUCKED, and on one occasion I had to take a cab from the nearest station I could get to before everything shut down. The hotel itself is very clean and everyone there was helpful and nice, but i say boo to the location. If you dont plan on being out late it would be fine though.

The last business hotel I stayed at in Tokyo is quite popular among Japanese travelers so reservations need to be at minimum two weeks in advance. But the staff will attempt English where necessary so it comes highly recommended.

The rooms were narrow, of course, and a little noisy as it was only two minute walk from the Minami-senju station. On the other hand, they were clean, furnished with a tv, tea, a yukatta, comfortable bedding, internet access on the first floor and all at an extremely low rate (3000 yen night/ cash only). What this means is basically the ratio of service to price means much more of a bang for the buck than you'll find virtually anywhere in the country. :)
 
Try the capsule hotels if you dont have much luggage or dont have precious gear, or you have a case to lock things up, as you can store these things in the back office. Its very cheap, just Y3800 I think. There are a few of them around Tokyo, say near the Prince Hotel in Shinjuku. I've used a few in Tokyo, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Cheapest way for singles to travel.

where can I find a good hotel/weekly mansion/hostel while under a tight budget? ($500 limit)

also im looking for one in hachioji since my friend is staying there
