This is a sign that JREF should drop the current chat plug-in and replace it with vbchat and an IRC room.

Noooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Never IRC for chatting!!!!!!!!! >_<. It spoiled all the chats I liked, one after another, I hate IRC and their dumb programs. The best idea would be to make a videochat, I don't care it's Java, it's funny enough. IRC sucks T_T...
From here, a formal request. Deletion of flashchat to make a AVChat, with those little windows to use micro and video.

IRC is not a program, it is a protocol that can be accessed from many programs, including some that are very similar to the one that we currently use (browser-window chat). I'm sorry if you had a bad experience with it, but it has been the most versatile and widely used chat programs on the internet for over a decade. it's hard to argue with a track record like that.

Yep, IRC is a protocol, but it has lots of programs (I was using mIRC). I just tell not to monopolize the market. With IRC you can't see video nor voice. I think ADSL is fast enough to show both in real time with multiple windows, or we gonna get stuck always with text-only?. I think it's just "cheap" to put an IRC room replacing the current chat, it has to be more creative, isn't supposed to be JREF the best Japanese learning website?. We all support admins to make a funny and reliable chat ^^.

The current chat interface allows voice and video? It looks to me like a cheap imitation of IRC, without any of the features that make IRC a viable option for a good international chatroom. It might not be a popular opinion, but I'm not sure if having voice and video is a good idea anyways.

Nobita-kun and I used to frequent that kind of audio/video chat room some years ago. It was made for language practice and at first we were really having fun, talking sometimes in English and other times in Japanese, especially because I really didn't have anyone around me in real who could speak English. But the chat room was found by hentai wankers and more and more of them started joining and bothering us by yelling like "Use your cam!!!!" "SHOW YOUR FACE!!!!!!" all the time and the chatroom ended up being closed... Having video boxes in a chatroom will attract hentai people who masturbate by watching girls and I really hate it.
I still sometimes wish the chatroom here had some audio function though so that I could practice speaking and listening to English and also I could hear how the non-Japanese people here speak Japanese. Well, I know you could do that on MSN or Skype though..
