I've had cats for the last 35 years. My cat now is 16 years old and she will be my last. Between food and vet bills , pets can be expensive. When I was young , I had 3 dogs die in a row and decided to switch to cats.

WOW big 16! I want to get a cat but I'm going to make sure I'm financially stable enough before hand. That would basically be my first "baby"

My vet is $80US to walk through the door. After exams and blood work and nail trimming , it runs around $300US or more twice a year. My cat has a thyroid problem so special food and medicine runs about $3000US a year. My favorite cat was tiger that lived to 18 years old. She was love bug who slept on my bed every night.

I'm a dog person, myself. I'm allergic to cats, and dogs less so. The first time I went to Japan, the cat at the house I stayed in literally put me into the hospital. Dogs tend to treat me better, but I need to wash my hands after handling them.

Reminded me of when the cable TV guy came to our house to do some work. Within 20 minutes , he had to leave. He was wheezing and all red in the face. I swear , every house in my neighborhood has a dog. When I go out , I always have dog treats in my pocket to say hi to them with. Once in a while , we dog sit for the neighbors and enjoy that.

It was asthma in my case, and I think it took a day or two. I know I spent at least one night before the cat tried to steal my soul.

I like both, though I admit I'm slightly biased towards canines. Some view felines as capricious "home decor," but I wouldn't go that far.

What I like about dogs is that they tend to participate actively in human activities. I got used to walking ours three or four times a day, come rain, snow, or typhoon. They travel with us wherever we go. Also, I got to know my neighbours and neighbourhood much better, as dogs allow you to strike up conversations with people you wouldn't meet otherwise.
