Cat cafes in Japan

Hello!

I'm a Danish university student, and I'm doing a project about cat cafes in Japan. They originated in Taiwan, but spread quickly to Japan, which is now home to almost 200 cat cafes!

Cat cafes differ greatly from one another. Some are just places where you can hang out with cats, some offer drinks and food (like a real cafe), there are some where you can adopt the cat staff, and some of them have books/manga and computers you can read/use freely.
The payment system is hour-based. You pay a certain price for every hour you spend there (some have prices for additional minutes). Most cafes also offer "economy packs" where you e.g. can get two hours playtime and a drink for a discounted price.

What you do think about these cafes?
And why do you think they're so popular in Japan? I'd really like opinions from Japanese people on this one.

Yeah, there's one of those somewhere near where I live, but I figure I can drop by a friend's house and be stared at and openly loathed by a cat for free.

I've been to many cat cafes in Japan. There are also some cat islands!

I think they're so popular because many people love cats but aren't allowed to have pets in their apartment. Or their apartment is so small (like literally only ONE room) so that they cannot keep a pet. Cat cafes are a great option to spend some quality time with clean, healthy and cute cats.

Some cat cafes are great and the cats look mentally healthy, but in some of the crowded ones in Tokyo I'm not so sure about that.
I prefer cat cafes in the countryside or on small islands.
