Can Japanese Kindle connect to US Amazon?

I'm living in Japan and thinking about getting a Kindle and was wondering if it can connect to Amazon.com or just Amazon.co.jp.
Also, does it have an English menu?
Anybody bought the Kindle Paperwhite?

I had considered it and found that I can't buy unless I have a credit card linked to a US account. If you do, no prob.

The same appears to be true vice versa.

So, I've chosen iPad and found I need a US credit card and location to buy via US iTunes and same applies vice versa.... :box:

Thanks for the reply. I think connecting a credit card to US Amazon is easy or do you mean a US bank account?. There was a case recently though where I wanted to buy US Playstation Point cards (actually a download) but I needed to have US address connected to it. So I just added a random US address and that worked. I believe that you can buy American iTunes cards on eBay and places like that. It may be the solution for you.

I meant a credit card issued by a US bank or similar is necessary for Amazon.com via Kindle.

With the iPad I bought in Japan, a credit card issued by a Japanese bank is necessary. But, thanks for the tip about iTunes cards!

I've handled a Paperwhite, I didn't like it as much as the normal "perl" e-ink display. Also, I'm not sure my eyes would like the backlight when reading in the dark for very long.

I've been thinking about what you said and realized that I actually purchased a kindle book myself, with a Japanese credit card and from Amazon.com (April 20, 2011). I don't actually have a Kindle but I read it on my mobile phone app. My mother has a Kindle though and she is able to purchase books from Amazon.com on her Irish credit card (recently). I think the Kindle will arrive today but may be nobody at home when the postman arrives...

The Kindle Paperwhite arrived today. Actually it was a present for my sister in New Zealand but I wanted to make sure that it would work so I opened it and connected it. Despite the fact that I have both an Amazon.co.jp and an Amazon.com account with the same email and password it didn't ask me to choose which and automatically connected to my Amazon.com account. I don't know why but that's good news I guess. I didn't try purchase anything with it but I could see my past purchase. I guess my sister will get it in the next couple of weeks. I'll let you know how she gets on.

Here is a small update. Because the Kindle has a lithium battery you can't ship it via the post office. Well, they said they can't ship lithium batteries of 100 watts or more and because they don't know what watt the battery is they can't ship it. Other post offices do have the ability to check though.

Some post offices are very strict about the rules and others are not.

Probably didn't help that there was a big Lithium sticker on the box and a warning. Anyway, good thing is that I was able to keep it and I was able to purchase books on it from Amazon.com from a Japanese credit card.
