Calling a Japanese Friend

I want to call one of my friends who is living in Japan, but the international code I am using (011-81+) does not seem to work.

The number I am calling is 11 digits and starts with 090-...
I've tried 011-81-090-.... but it doesnt work.

I've called other friends in japan whose phone numbers don't begin in 090 and I have had no problem connecting with them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

090 is the phone numbers for mobile.
In any case, you have to knock off the first 0, either from 090 (or 080), or area code such as 03 for Tokyo, when calling to Japan from abroad.
(This calling without the first 0 applies to most countries. The one exception I know of is Italy.)

If the international call from your country begins with 011, then you should call 011-81-90-XXXX
