Japanese beverage giant Asahi Group Holdings has been hit by a cyberattack that disrupted shipments of its beer and other products, as well as the distribution of rival brands stored at its warehouses. The company stated that the attack triggered a system failure around 7 a.m. on Monday, resulting in the suspension of domestic orders and shipping of alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, as well as food items. Production at several major factories across Japan has come to a standstill. Asahi stressed that so far, there is no evidence of any customer or employee personal data being leaked.
The company has 30 plants in Japan that produce beer, beverages, and food products, but it is still investigating whether all of them have stopped production, the spokesperson added. The makers of Asahi Super Dry Beer, Nikka Whisky, and Mitsuya Cider announced last night that their group companies in Japan have suspended operations, including order processing, shipping, and call centre functions, due to a system outage caused by a cyberattack.
