anyone here a lawyer?

I was explaining what it meant to have a lawyer on retainer. He asked me why you just can't call a lawyer when you have a particular case or question, I am not a lawyer and have had almost no dealings with lawyers, and I know there are a lot of smart people hanging out on jref so.... does anyone know what benefits one gets from putting a lawyer on retainer?

While I am not a lawyer myself, I have had many dealings with attorneys. From my understanding, while retaining a lawyer you gain the services of said lawyer and all the resources at their disposal. This also includes any interns or paralegals employed by said lawyer/firm. Basically... you're privy to his/her counsel on whatever legal matters surround your (the client's) situation. This also means exclusive representation should a draft (lawsuit) be filed and the issue goes to court. Plus... it's nice to be able pick your lawyer's brains every now and then just for fun. 8-p
