Ancient Japanese?

I want to learn Japanese!!!
I can recite a little ancient Japanese, my parents are Buddhists of the SGI and I grew up learning to recite Gonyo and about the Buddhism that started there in the 13th century.
Does anyone understand this?
Je Ga Toku Burai, Shokyo Shokoshu...
???
I understand that no one speaks that language anymore, but how different are the two?

Anyways, I want to learn both.
Say something in Japanese and I will try to say something back in Japanese, it will be fun because of what little I know, but how fast I can learn if you say something. Please keep the statements small, I am not that charged up yet!!!

Jo? Zen? Bo?
This means something different in modern and in ancient Japanese. I know the Ancient meaning very well, but I hear that Bo is sorta funny in the modern meaning of the word. Am I better of with just Jozen here? (Note, please include something short in Japanese so I can answer something short back)

Err...something is wrong and all I see is question marks. How do I do anything with that? Aside...I can read calligraphy...write in out with letters and I can answer!

It's called mozibake/mojibake. What is the OS (WindowsXP, WindowsVista, MacOSx, KolibriOS, Menuet, DexOS, Linux, etc) of the computer you have and what browser are you using (firefox, IE, Opera, etc)

勤行 gongyo is a special term in Buddhism and refers to the recitation of sutra/mantra, according to internet sources.
Sutra/mantra are mainly Sanskrit language and in Japan they use Chinese version i.e. those transcripted into kanji (or Chinese characters).
So it is not ancient Japanese, it is something quite different.

If you're interested in gongyo, you should learn about it.
If you'Re interested in Japanese language (including acient one), you should forget about gongyo.

I've found SGI's site on gongyo, which you might find interesting.

I have learned a lot about gongyo, but perhaps I learned wrong when I learned that it is recited in ancient Japanese? I think that is what I was taught somewhere? So or so, I am interested in learning Japanese, probably more so for modern Japanese, as that is more useful today. But since this thread is for Ancient Japanese, this can then become a place to learn about Ancient Japanese. I will look for some good links that might be helpful for any who come tot his thread to learn Ancient Japanese, after I find them...maybe someone else already knows some very good links for this. As well, I will look into the modern Japanese more as well.

To answer the other question; I have Win 98 and I use firefox. If there is a remedy so I could see the calligraphy I would like to know about is. If not, then I will have to keep my eyes out for one, or for a link to a place where I can still see it. For Example, in these smilies I can see it fine:

Download the Microsoft Global IME file!

Usually you get prompted to download the appropriate language file, when you visit a site with Japanese characters. The installation is automatic.

(But you may need to download it manually for Windows 98...:?)

If you only see question marks, it's not mojibake. You need to have asian language support installed on your computer, and if you still have problems, you need to try a different encoding (should be something like view>character encoding)

To see Japanese language support on win98/Win98SE

Click Start, Control Panel,
Then go to Language/Region (May be labelled differently)
Click through the tabs at the top until you see 'Install support for Eastern complex languages' or something similar. Clicking the tick box and apply should tell you that it is installing support for chinese, korean, japanese etc.

You will have to restart your PC for them to work.

God, setting up Japanese is SOO much easier in ubuntu!

Yes, I think so! Download Global IME (Japanese language) from the Microsoft link in Post #8 (diceke).

This must be done manually for Windows 98. This was made automatic (or nearly automatic) for all subsequent Windows systems.

WOW, it worked!!! It was so easy too! I now have Japanese on my screen!

Thanks for the link, I finally looked into it and found it very interesting indeed. The wording is slightly different then Burt Watson's, though the content is almost identicle. I was very happy to read this version of the translation, as I am any.

So, if the Gongyo isn't Japanese, then its Ancient Chinese? If you know what it is exactly, I would like to know, since I grew up reciting it as I learned Buddhism from my parents at an early age.

What's with all the "ancient" hang up?

It's JUST Chinese. Classical Chinese, yes, but it's just Chinese. In the Japanese sutra, it's being read in sino-japanese pronunciation. That's all.
