Hi. I need to gather some material for school about ancient japanese traditions that remain nowdays. But theres a big problem. There are tonns of info on the net and i really cant figure out about what to write.

It would be great in you could give me a hint: what tradotions are really relevant nowdays in Japan? Mostly Im curious about every day rituals, like sake, geishas, hara-kiri etc

thats the problem that i cant find the information il looking for. For example ive learned abou bonsai, but i have no idea wheather every person has a bonsai in his house or are there only a few persons ho go in for them. I cant any information about how spread are these or those traditions.

I would be very thankful in any of u could answer these questions:
- what everyday rituals ar widely spread among ordinary city people of medium income?
- what about entertainment? How popular are traditional games, theaters etc. Maybe some traditional hobbies like bonsai.
- about cooking. what table rituals do they have? (except tea rituals)
- what abou schools? any ancient stuff there?

How about trying to study a particular tradition. instead of a whole bunch.

Perhaps...Eisa, Caligraphy, Martial Arts, etc only one though.

I wouldn't overlook Martial Arts such as Karate. Thats an ancient tradition still alive and well in Japan and around the world.

But be careful - most Japanese martial arts are modern (ie. Aikido, Judo, Shorinji Kempo) or are not Japanese (Karate is Okinawan, Okinawa is now part of Japan but only because it was captured in 1879, Shorinji Kempo is based on Chinese martial arts, etc).

If you want "ancient", look at kendo (use MULTIPLE SOURCES, the history tends to be mixed, but technically its a form of swordwork practice thats lasted a long time) and kyudo (same as kendo, but archery).
