Yeah It was broadcasted on TV 3-4 years ago.
If my memories are good the story was like this:
A guy and a girl were in love but the girl suffered from a heart illness.
One day the girl was brought to the hospital and they told her she had only a short period of time left unless she finds another heart and get some surgery.
The guy was really sad when he heard that. Several days later, he came home saying he had a headache and took some aspirin but the headache got worse and no doctor could say what kind of illness he had. His family then brought him to the hospital and the guy muttered "if something was to happen to me please give my heart to my loved one". He passed away a few hours after and in the end the girl survived because of his heart.

You're right. For what I know the average is around 5.5 l for men, 5 l for women (somewhere I read 4-6 l).
A loss of more than 40% blood should be life threatening, a loss of 5 litres means sure death, unless you get a blood transfusion at the same time.

True Story, I Was There !!

A man I worked with had a blood vessel burst and bled into his stomach. He vomitted up a 12 foot circle of blood onto the floor, and this man was only 4foot 11 inches tall!
The ambulance got there and started pushing a fluid IV and put on mass-trousers to keep his blood pressure up.
He was back to work 2 weeks later. None of us who saw all that blood believed he would live!! As a police officer,
I saw many accidents where we assumed the person was going to die, and the pulled through! The human body can take incredible punishment and come back! You have to see these things to believe them sometimes.
