How the quake has moved Japan

Japan's coastline may have shifted by as much as 4m (13ft) to the east following Friday's 8.9 Magnitude earthquake, according to experts.

Data from the country's Geonet network of around 1,200 GPS monitoring stations suggest a large displacement following the massive quake.

Dr Roger Musson from the British Geological Survey (BGS) told BBC News the movement observed following the quake was "in line with what you get when you have an earthquake this big".

The quake probably shifted Earth on its axis by about 6.5 inches (16.5cm) and caused the planet to rotate somewhat faster, shortening the length of the day by about 1.8 millionths of a second.

Japan's meteorological agency has proposed updating the magnitude of the earthquake to 9.0.

This would make it the joint fifth biggest quake since instrumental records began, but other agencies have not yet followed suit.

well apparently there hasnt been any melt-down yet....which is the lastest at this time and that they are cooling it down with sea water....

I want to say I'm sorry for any family or friends or loved ones that died due to the earthquake/tsunami. It's so sad that a disaster like this has to happen... I know Japan's a very strong country, and they'll be able to rise back up again soon.

"Japan's fears of a nuclear meltdown are rising after a third explosion and fire at a quake-damaged nuclear plant have led to radiation leaking from the facility.

The blast tore through the unit 2 reactor at Fukushima 1 and a fire broke out in the number 4 reactor but has now been extinguished.

Radiation fears after Japan blast

Radiation from Japan's quake-stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has reached harmful levels, the government says.

The warning comes after the plant was rocked by a third blast which appears to have damaged one of the reactors' containment systems for the first time.

If it is breached, there are fears of more serious radioactive leaks.

Officials have extended the danger zone, warning residents within 30km (18 miles) to evacuate or stay indoors.

There seems to be no end in sight to the massive issues with the Fukushima nuclear power plant. The #4 reactor has apparently caught fire this morning. There was an explosion at the #2 reactor, and people are being told to stay away. The thing is, if any one of these reactors were to spew nuclear radiation into the atmosphere in any large amount, it's my opinion that the 20-200km radius between the evacuees & the power plant will probably not be far enough. It's my hope that it doesn't go any further. Yet, with the Japanese government being so hush-hush(For probably good reason), it's got me seriously worried.

I hope the Japanese economy calms down soon too. Nikkei is down 11 percent today. That's already bad, but it's only Tuesday. We still have some time in week left..

The wind will turn towards sea... in the morning, though.
I hope the Japanese economy calms down soon too. Nikkei is down 11 percent today. That's already bad, but it's only Tuesday. We still have some time in week left..

I think the moment the reactors will be under a certain level of control again, it will slow down a bit.

It even fell down to 14 percent at one point today...

On the First Section, declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones 1,637 to 34, with six others remaining unchanged.

European stock markets have fallen sharply amid fears that Japan's earthquake may undermine supply chains for global manufacturers.

The German Dax index led the way, down 5% at 1015 GMT, led by tech companies and carmakers which rely on Japanese suppliers for crucial parts.

Companies linked to the nuclear energy industry were also badly hurt.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Japanese market plunged again on fears of a meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

There have been reports of a fire and another explosion at the plant.

Japan was hit by a massive earthquake and tsunami on Friday, causing billions of dollars of damage.

The Nikkei 225 shed 10.6% on Tuesday to 8,605 and had been down 14% at one point, registering its biggest two-day drop in 40 years. The broader Topix index fell 9.5%.

I'm really glad my country is able to help in any capacity possible. Makes me really happy. Everyone working together to ease the suffering of the Japanese people and clean up the mess left behind by the tsunami & earthquake is one of the few positives in this wretched situation that Japan is in.

It's been nearly four days since the earthquake & tsunami hit. We need to find as many survivors in the aftermath of this cataclysm before we pass the threshold between survivors remaining alive while trapped and..the other.

Exactly, the more we find alive sooner, the better. There are just too many people missing to be able to find all of them, but we can just hope and pray that the ones still left alive will be found very soon, before they can't hold on any more.

Look at that! All that water? It used to be land. Harrowing to see that. This has been such a harrowing experience for us all. I seriously hope Japan recovers from this quickly. Nobody deserves this. I would never wish this on anybody, even if they were the greatest evil known to man. It's just too horrible.

Also, it appears that the situation at the Fukushima nuclear power plant has been upgraded to a 6 out of 7. Tokyo government officials are saying the radiation there is 10 times than normal, and I'm expecting that to increase, as much as I don't want to say it. Please, to all our members in Japan, stay safe and away from harm.
 
Holy s..... that's just awful. I am finding it hard to see how Japan will recover from this, especially if situations at the Fukushima plant get any worse, but I just hope they do. I'm not religious, or I'd pray for Japan. All I can do it sit and hope. And donate, of course.

Yes, I implore anyone capable of donating to do so. If you cannot donate to a charity aiding in the relief effort, please spread awareness of this catastrophe in your area! Talk to your neighbors, friends, and family about donating even $1. I know the Red Cross are aiding in the relief effort, as are many other charitable organizations. Spreading awareness and donating go hand in hand! Don't let people ignore this. It's our duty as fellow human beings to support each other in times of crisis.

A big earthquake of seismic intensity 6 occurred in Shizuoka.
Tokyo is seismic intensity 3.
 
We had pans and pots falling in the kitchen.

How many power plants are there in Shizuoka?
