I see that there was a rather large earthquake a bit after 10AM in the Nigatta and Nagano prefecture areas, the reports off the news on NHK right now are saying that the earthquake was shindo 6 on the Japan earthquake scale.

I pray that everyone is fine and hope that are not any casualties.

Havnt heard about it yet from this end but i also hope everyone is OK and that there is minimal damage...as minimal as possible.

I was engaged in a major transaction and hurriedly concluded it. In case the building collapsed I didn't want to be dug out in such a condition.

You were in the quake zone?! Glad to hear you're okay.

I read the U.S.G.S. report on it and they had it pegged at magnitude 6.7.

Being in Japan is killing my family haha... in our city there's never any natural distasters..and there's one everyday here almost lol. They keep phoning me after hearing the news "ARE U OKAY!?"..even when it's something waaay far from Tokyo lol (Like this week about the typhoon and earthquake)

hmm know what you mean Pika la. When the big Tsunami hit asia in 2004 my family were worried that i was caught in it...even though i was on the opposite side of Asia....

Yes, it would never do to be found in that condition... very wise of you... 😊

Seriously, glad everyone seems to be okay. :p

Today has been a particular busy day for earthquakes. This is from www.asahi.com 's earthquake information website.

All of those 6's on the far right were in Niigata.
I even felt a small tremor not too long ago, although I don't see any earthquakes listed for the Tokai area yet...

Now all we have to do is wait for our conspiracy theorist to make a thread about all these earthquakes and aftershocks being man made just like the typhoon.

Seriously now, it appears that over 500 people have been injured and a number of people that died as well. I wish them and the area a fast recovery.

Cute, however point taken....new post here my condolences to the families of the people who died and wishing a fast and compete recovery to the over 700 people that have been injured.

I am scared and I want to go home! We couldn't get back to Tokyo because the Shinkansen was shut down. I can't take anymore aftershocks....we just had a big one about 10 minutes ago. I am happy that we are all fine, just cracked walls and such and I do feel terrible for those who have died and those people who are suffering the loss of their homes. It's starting to shake again!!

I feel very sorry for the people who were badly wounded, died, and the people who lost their houses and everything.
I saw a lot of damage on TV. Always very sad and frightening those earthquakes.

It seems a lot of people were napping during geography class.

Or it's George Bush's fault.

Where are you at? Just get into a safe area (smallest room, under a desk, etc.). If you can, get outside and away from buildings or anything that can fall on you.

I know how you feel, having experienced first-hand the 1994 Northridge Quake.

Not a good situation. I just read some radioactive water leaked from the nuclear power plant in the quake zone.

I hope that everyone in the region is getting all the help that they need. Have just read that there has been a second similar magnitude quake out at sea.

Hope those 4 plates stop moving around so much.

doinkies saw a news report about the Niigata earthquake (before the aftershock and stuff), and in this report, they showed the initial earthquake...they went to this gym and all the stuff that they were selling in the gym was shaking and even the pool was rippling from the earthquake. It looked pretty doinky. I feel really sorry for the people in the area who got hurt and lost their houses, and also my condolences go out to those who died.

I'd also be pretty scared if I was in such an earthquake, fortunately although I also live in an earthquake-prone place I've never been in any really big earthquakes like that.

First the typhoon and now the earthquake - here in the U.S. we're hearing it was 6.8. I'm glad people on the forum are okay, and I hope nothing else happens to Japan for a while! I've felt some strong earthquakes, but not as strong as 6.8.

I didn't appreciate that our Canadian media reported this morning that no radioactive material had leaked, but upon reading another article it was reported that some 'heavy water' had in fact leaked during the earthquake. It's a small point but it just goes to show how incompetent some media outlets are regarding fairly significant daily news pieces.

From my understanding of the articles though it was a local leak and did not affect the surrounding environment? The fire was just a transformer I do not think it was directly responsible.

Disaster was avoided this time. ☝

You'll get used to it in time, Goldiegirl; just let it settle into your bones.

I had been right here at the house on the this PC...some of you know exactly which one...I felt it right away, and as usual, 'felt' it for about 2 seconds to see if there was going to be an increase in motion. There was, and so I rushed into the kitchen--there's a quicker escape route there and no second floor above. Having done that, I waited just a couple of more seconds to realize that that was about all it was going to give, so I went back to the PC.

It had been a four here. If it had been a six, the house would be flat now; I know. The dozo fared much better it seemed. Not a single beer can fell down. (in the house a couple of things did fall)

Yes, I feel for those that were injured and hope for their speedy recovery, and my heart goes out to those that have lost loved ones. Twice, now, in some, what, three years? for Niigata? I think they took the one that had been pinned for Nagano this time 'round !!

maybe I'll make my bedroom in the dozo from now on...hee, hee, hee.....
