願って /negatte interpretation in sentence

Hi guys,
In the following sentence, is the use of 願って a sentence conjunction meaning "to pray and"?

日本で家族が病気などをしないように願ってお正月「お せち料理」などを食べます.

Which is better translation?


In Japan, families in order that there is no illness, pray and eat new years 「おせち料理」.

In Japan families pray for good health and at new year eat おせち料理.

The second one is better.

お正月「お せち料理」 feels strange to me, though.

It's also possible to interpret that the -te form is used to indicate the reason/cause of the main clause there.

They eat sechi-rōyri because they're wishing they don't fall ill? I guess that's pretty close to the first one. So... I suppose the answer is closer to "it depends on the context."

Hmm, "eat (in order) to pray" seems better than "pray and then eat" to me in that context.

お正月 can be used without に, as same as 1月, 2月,,,.

Does it have to be consecutive actions? I thought it could be more like "do X, and also do Y."

My interpretation is "do Y for X" (or "do Y while Xing" in this case, maybe).
