やる has a number of uses. In some cases it is used in a similar way to する (but it's somewhat rougher, and shouldn't be used to replace する in set patterns). It can take slang meanings here including to kill someone or to sleep with someone (think "do" in English as in "do him in" or "did you and him do it?").

It can also be used as a giving verb. Again, some caution here. It's fine for talking about "giving" things to non-humans, e.g. if you want some reasonably neutral example sentences use something like:
花に水をやる
猫にエサをやる

Or depending on your relationship to the person you're speaking to it can be used. e.g. by older brother to younger sibling, senpai to kouhai, or shonen manga protagonist to just about anybody:
手伝ってやる
