Translation given: "There are so many anti-smoking campaigns these days; maybe smoking really is a threat to the public order."
What does 禁煙といわれる以上 mean? I cannot make sense of it in context.
2. それに対して何のことかさっぱりわからないカタカナを 使うな、と怒る人がいる。
What does 何のことかさっぱりわからない mean?
3. 確かに元々ある日本語で表現できるなら、また翻訳の日 本語で十分意味が伝わるなら、わざわざカタカナを使う ことはないだろう。
a) Does また翻訳の日本語で十分意味が伝わるなら mean "... or if the full meaning is expressed by a translation into Japanese" – in other words, you should not use katakana if there is a perfectly good Japanese word to express the same thing? One problem I have with this is that 翻訳の日本語 looks the "wrong way round" to me for the meaning "translation into Japanese". I would expect 日本語の翻訳. I think I remember having a similar problem before, but unfortunately I cannot now locate the relevant thread.
b) What exactly is わざわざ conveying here?
c) Does ～ことはないだろう mean something like "probably one would not / should not..."?
