When you've been surrounded by books your entire life, they are normal, even comforting. It's like a pdf that you've downloaded onto paper.
They're not an adversary taunting you for not having completed reading them; they're a friend encouraging you to read and expand your horizons even more.

Ok then I can say you don't necessarily need books to learn basic/conversational Japanese. Of course if you want to get proficient at reading Japanese then yes of course you need books.

Right on! I feel like they'll make a book about any aspect of Japanese, haha. Do you guys think one needs a book on grammar? Right now, I'm learning vocabulary on homemade flash cards. I have the pitch accent pattern written on each card (3000 of them
). I feel like once I have a vocabulary base it'll be easier to learn grammar by making sentences up in my head. Your thoughts? Haha

You gotta learn the grammar somehow. Grammar is the rules of the game, so to speak. Personally, I think learning vocab in tandem with grammar is the best way to go,

Definitely start working on grammar. I'd say that's more important than vocabulary. Unless you're cramming for a trip or something. You only need a handful of words to start working on grammar patterns, verb tense, etc. Work through a textbook. Of if you're a modern kind of guy use videos. Check out Lily's videos I posted here (or somewhere) recently. Start with these 200 basic ones.

Everyone in my family (me especially ) are missing the DNA gene for spelling and grammar. My wife got me a dictionary to place next to my PC , but I still ask her every 5 minutes "how do I spell this" LOL.
