1. もちろん、こんなことは、ばかげています。でも、フッ クにとっては、もうそれだけで、じゅうぶんよく、わか りました。

What does もうそれだけで mean, and how is that meaning obtained? Of course, I recognise もう・それ・だけ・で, but I do not understand what that combination of words means in this context.


2. フックはもう、戦ってはいても、勝てる希望は持てなくなりました。

戦ってはいて is 戦って・は・いて, right? Is this は for emphasis?


3. まさか、その下でワニが自分を待っていようとは知りま せん。

Is 待っていよう the volitional form of 待っている? Why that form? There seems no obvious correspondence in English.


4. フックは、たったひとつ最後の勝利をかち得ました。フ ックのために、せめて最後くらいはかざってやりましょ う。

What does せめて最後くらいは mean?

2. Probably more like contrast.

3. It goes with まさか. ～うとは is used with まさか and to show surprise, incredulity, etc.

4. せめて is "at the least". 最後 here refers to the 最後 phrase in the previous sentence.

Thanks Glenn. In (4), I understand what せめて, 最後 and くらい mean individually. However, I do not grasp what the whole combination of words means. Can you shed any light?

My understanding of it is that it's saying something like "let's at least do Hook the favor of showing off his final victory." That's a difficult one to translate, I think, because of 飾る. Either that or I'm not understanding it right either, but that's what it appears to be saying to me.

Also, re: 1., it could be that それ refers to something earlier that isn't in either of those sentences.
