Hi,


1. しばらくの間、おとうさんは、犬小屋から半分からだをのり出して、みんなに歓迎された話をしました。

Does みんなに歓迎された話をしました mean, essentially, that he said things that everyone was pleased to hear? Somehow I feel I am missing the point of this sentence.


2. 「ティンク、早く、窓をしめて、かぎをおかけ。」

Is おかけ = お (honorific) + かけ (from かける)? If so, is かけ a kind of imperative?

みんなに歓迎された話 refers to a story he had been hailed by everyone. It's about a past story, not at that time.

2. This is a bit like おくれ, I think. What is the rule for the formation of such imperatives? Is it always the -masu stem? Can all verbs have such imperatives?
 
Basically, yes; お乗り, お出し, おし(from する), お話し, お閉め,,,. This imperative is basically used by old people, especially women, although it's not commonly used in daily conversation. (In other words, this is a kind of "symbol" to show the speaker is an old man/woman.)
 
OK .. Oh, one more thing... Does this kind of imperative always have the お- prefix, or can it potentially be used without?
 
私の記憶は確かならば・・・ Yes, it can. I think it's dialectal, though, like 速くきい！ or something.
 
Yeah, just the -masu stem without お can work in some dialects (e.g. はよ閉め = 早く閉めろ), but this expression is used also by young people, so it's not the same thing. It's better to think that お is always needed, I think.
 
Man, I thought for sure someone would catch the 料理の鉄人 reference.
 
Ah, I got it now. Although it should be 私の記憶が確かならば.
 
So it's が, eh? Well, it has been a while since I've heard it, so I'm blaming memory on that one.

eeky, it was known as Iron Chef in the States. Not sure if it was ever broadcast in the UK.

Obviously it passed me by -- possibly because it was on at 5 pm, which is not a time at which I am ever watching TV. As far as cooking shows are concerned, the best known one here is probably "MasterChef".
 
That isn't 料理の鉄人, though; that's Iron Chef UK. I don't consider Iron Chef America to be 料理の鉄人 either. Before there was Iron Chef America, Food Network would cast the original Japanese episodes of Iron Chef. Then, when they saw what a hit it was, they decided to produce their own version. The original Japanese version, the one just called Iron Chef, is 料理の鉄人 (well, to me, anyway).
 
but you know there is a japanese host, and japanese iron chef on the american version
 
The host is only partly Japanese, and doesn't have a Japanese surname, although he is supposedly the nephew of the Japanese host or otherwise related somehow, and they did steal 森本先生, yes. It's still not 料理の鉄人, though.
